How much Manchester United could earn from Alvaro Carreras to Real Madrid as transfer complete

Former Manchester United defender Alvaro Carreras looks set to re-join Real Madrid in the coming days as part of Xavi Alonso’s new side.

Manchester United signed Alvaro Carreras from Real Madrid in the summer of 2020 and the youngster immediately made an impact in the youth teams at Old Trafford.

After winning the Under-21s Player of the Year in 2021/22, Carreras made a brilliant impression on loan at Preston North End the following campaign, taking their Young Player of the Year award.

But he was never able to get a chance under Erik ten Hag, who sold him to Benfica in 2023 even when there were known struggles at left-back in his squad.

Now, after shining in Portugal, the 21-year-old looks set to join Real Madrid to become a key player in Xavi Alonso’s new team next season, with some reports even claiming that a deal has been agreed.

How much United could earn from Carreras to Madrid

It is well known that the release clause in Carreras’ deal at Benfica is around £42 million and that is the price Madrid are going to have to pay.

When United sold the defender two years ago, a sell-on clause also included in the contract. While the exact percentage is unknown, the Manchester Evening News report that it is a ‘significant’ amount.

Considering the 40% sell-on clause included in Maxi Oydele’s departure and the 50% in Mason Greenwood’s contract at Marseille, it seems likely that Carreras’ will be in the same ballpark.

If the percentage is at 40% then United would be set to receive just under £17 million as part of Carreras’ move to the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium.

Of course, United also have their own buyback option included in the deal too, which would allow them to sign Carreras for just £16 million, but the player does not want to return to England.

United need money for summer rebuild

United need to generate funds this summer to help sign players and getting extra money for these players would be a good step.

Greenwood’s potential move this summer would likely earn the club around £15 million but the 23-year-old has claimed that he wants to stay in France.

The Reds are planning to bolster their frontline significantly and already have the funds to make those signings early in the window.

But every fan knows that many more problems need to be solved and United will need to earn enough cash to deal with all of them.
