Mason Greenwood could be set for a shock move back to the Premier League and Manchester United are still set to profit from such a transfer.
Manchester United suspended Mason Greenwood in January 2022 following his arrest on suspicion of rape, assault, and coercive control, after audio and video evidence emerged on social media.
Greenwood denied the allegations, and in early 2023, the charges were dropped due to the withdrawal of key witnesses and the emergence of new evidence that cast doubt on the chances of a conviction.
Subsequently, United launched their own internal investigation and determined that Greenwood’s future would be best served away from Old Trafford.
He was loaned to La Liga side Getafe in the summer of 2023, where he impressed by scoring 10 goals and providing six assists. Following his successful stint in Spain, he secured a permanent transfer to French club Marseille for a reported fee of £26 million.
Greenwood attracting Premier League interest
According to a report from the Telegraph, there is speculation that Greenwood is unsettled at Marseille and it is possible that he leaves this summer.
He has scored 18 goals so far in his first season in France but has also received criticism throughout periods of the campaign for poor form and work-rate.
It was claimed that those who know the 23-year-old say that there are Premier League clubs interested in the former United forward, and the report states that there are at least two English clubs ” weighing up an approach” for Greenwood.
Despite suggestions of a move to Italy or back to Spain, it was added that Greenwood has a desire to return to the north of England.
There were rumours of Premier League interest in Greenwood last year when he permanently departed Old Trafford although there were obvious concerns about the potential backlash of such a deal.
How much United can pocket from Greenwood deal
When United sold Greenwood to Marseille in the summer of 2024, there was a hefty sell-on clause included in the contract. It was part of the reason why the club accepted a £26 million bid.
The Reds will receive 50% of the profits the French side make from his likely sale. For example, if they manage to sell him for £50 million, the English club would receive around £12 million.
However, there have been reports of a sale higher than that price, and Marseille will want to bump up the price due to the knowledge of that clause.
It remains to be seen how much the player will be sold for, but it has previously been suggested that PSG were willing to make an offer of more than £60 million for him – a fee which would see United earn an extra £17 million from their former player.
