Ruben Amorim’s future at Manchester United somehow already seems in some doubt after a terrible start to life in the Premier League.
Manchester United appointed Ruben Amorim last November after they decided to sack Erik ten Hag. The Portuguese head coach immediately tried to implement his preferred system.
Six months later and things in the Premier League have managed to get worse, with the team sitting 16th in the league with just two fixtures remaining.
Somehow, United still have the chance to qualify for the Champions League next season as they prepare for a Europa League final against fellow strugglers Tottenham Hotspur.
However, the dreadful league campaign will not be forgotten no matter the result in the final, and even though there is important context to apply to Amorim’s struggles, there are still beginning to be calls for him to be sacked.
It would seem like an unthinkable prospect without the manager even having a full season, although the new ownership at Old Trafford have already shown a level of ruthlessness through the exits of Ten Hag and Dan Ashworth.
Amorim also hinted in his latest press conference that if things do not significantly improve in the next season then he should be dismissed.
How much United would have to spend to sack Amorim revealed
United fans know all about the significant financial outlay from the club after deciding to sack Ten Hag and bring in Amorim last November. The club’s account revealed that the two decisions cost around £21 million in total.
This would have been partly because Ten Hag had only recently signed a one-year extension at the club in the previous summer.
When he joined the club, Amorim signed a two-and-a-half year deal at Old Trafford which is supposed to keep him in charge until the end of the 2026/27 campaign.
Should United make the brutal decision to sack him ahead of next season, it has been revealed by The Sun that the total cost would come to around £20 million.
The report explained that Amorim is earning around £6 million per year himself, which would mean releasing him from his contract would cost £12 million.
But then an additional cost of £8 million would come to relieving the backroom staff Amorim brought with him, making the total cost similar to the amount the club paid to sack Ten Hag and bring the Portuguese coach in.
United unlikely to sack Amorim this summer
Spending £40 million on sacking coaches in less than a year sounds extremely Manchester United.
But it doesn’t really seem like something United can afford to do right now, especially when you consider that the club would likely need to spend even more to buy another manager out of their current contract.
The United boss also has the full support of the match-goers, which is important. He also still has the chance to become the second-ever manager in club history to win European silverware in his first season.
It feels like he will almost certainly start the next season as the United head coach whether he wins the Europa League or not.
But even Amorim admitted that if things don’t significantly improve at the start of next term, his future could be in doubt.
