How much John Victor will cost Manchester United as Botafogo preparing for exit of ‘dominant’ goalkeeper

Botafogo goalkeeper John Victor is reportedly one of the players Manchester United are considering during the summer transfer window.

Manchester United are reportedly in the market for a new goalkeeper this summer, as Ruben Amorim continues reshaping his squad ahead of his first full season at the helm.

While André Onana remains the club’s No.1 and enjoys a strong working relationship with Amorim — as exclusively reported by UtdDistrict — the Cameroonian shot-stopper has had a mixed time at Old Trafford.

Despite showing flashes of the quality that earned him a move from Inter in 2023, his inconsistency has highlighted the need for stronger competition in the goalkeeping department at the bare minimum.

Following the £62.5 million signing of Matheus Cunha and the imminent arrival of Bryan Mbeumo for a similar fee, Amorim is now expected to focus on reinforcing other areas of the squad — including between the posts.

With Altay Bayındır failing to convince as a reliable backup and now expected to depart this summer, United are prioritising the addition of a new goalkeeper to provide genuine competition for Onana and raise overall standards.

Onana’s recent hamstring injury, which will rule him out of the entire pre-season and possibly the start of the Premier League campaign, has further accelerated the club’s search for a high-calibre deputy.

How much will John Victor cost for United?

One of the options being considered between the sticks at Old Trafford is Botafogo no.1 John Victor, who has been described as a goalkeeper who offers ‘dominance’ in his box.

It is being reported by Goal Brasil that Botafogo are preparing for the possibility of Victor’s departure this summer amid interest from United.

The 29-year-old would cost United just £5.9 million as that is what his release clause is set at, and the aforementioned report explained that the Reds are willing to activate that clause.

With other priorities in the transfer window, such as a striker and central midfielder, securing Victor to become strong competition for Onana at such a low price seems like a good deal.

United should also assess Vitek

United could also look internally for Onana’s competition, with calls for 21-year-old ‘keeper Radek Vitek to get a chance in pre-season.

Vitek impressed during last summer’s pre-season and is coming off a strong loan spell at Blau-Weiss Linz, where he made 28 appearances and helped them to a record-high sixth-place finish in the Austrian Bundesliga.

Due to Onana’s injury, and the fact that Bayindir could leave, Vitek is set for more minutes this summer which gives Amorim a closer look at a goalkeeper.

The United boss could then decide whether Vitek is worthy competition for Onana or if the club need to activate that release clause for Victor.
