How much Chelsea would have to pay Manchester United by backing out of Jadon Sancho permanent transfer

Chelsea are reportedly considering pulling out of their agreement to sign Jadon Sancho permanently from Manchester United at the end of the season.

In the final days of the 2024 summer transfer window, Jadon Sancho left Manchester United to join Chelsea on loan for the 2024/25 season.

It was later revealed that the deal included an obligation for Chelsea to sign the winger permanently for £25 million in the summer.

Sancho had previously fallen out of favour under Erik ten Hag and was loaned to Borussia Dortmund. Although he was reintegrated into the United squad in July 2024, uncertainty surrounded his long-term future at Old Trafford.

The 24-year-old made a promising start at Stamford Bridge, registering three assists in his first three appearances. However, his form has since dipped, managing just four goal contributions in the next 27 games.

This has led to rumours suggesting that Chelsea could instead opt to pay a fine to back out of their agreement with United rather than pay the £25 million.

United fans thought that Sancho was no longer their problem but he could indeed end up back at Old Trafford if Chelsea decide to pay this fine.

According to the Manchester Evening News, Chelsea’s payment to United to pull out of the Sancho deal would amount to “millions of pounds”.

Additionally, other reports suggest that the Blues would be required to reimburse the Old Trafford club for the wages they covered during Sancho’s loan spell.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe previously revealed that United are paying half of Sancho’s estimated £300,000-a-week salary. This would mean Chelsea owes around £6.15 million to United in wage repayments.

That may end up being positive for the Reds in a financial sense, as they would still then be able to try and sell Sancho elsewhere.

It was also noted in that article that United would then consider whether to activate the year-long extension in Sancho’s contract, which runs out at the end of next season.

This would give United more power in any negotiations but the report clarified that, on the other hand, they could decide against offering him an extension and instead secure him another loan before he would eventually leave the club for free at the end of the 2025/26 campaign.

Ultimately, United are still working on the assumption that Chelsea will not back out of the agreement and that would certainly be easier for those at Old Trafford, who have enough things to deal with in the next transfer window.

Chelsea told to pull out of Sancho deal

Meanwhile, Chelsea have been encouraged by their ex-player Glen Johnson to go back on their agreement with United over Sancho.

The former right-back believes that the £25 million transfer fee cannot be justified when looking at Sancho’s performances this season.

“Jadon Sancho started well at Chelsea, but the problem with him is that he’s too inconsistent,” the 40-year-old told Betano.

“On his day when he’s up for it, he can look like a world beater, but it just isn’t happening often enough to justify the transfer for Chelsea at the moment.

“If Chelsea have the opportunity to go back to Manchester United at the end of the season and not pay the transfer fee for the deal, they may see that as a better outcome for them from a financial standpoint.

“I could see why they’d be looking to do that – the levels we’re seeing with Sancho at the moment are similar to what we’ve seen from him at other clubs for a while now, really.”
