Chelsea have hijacked a deal for Manchester United target Geovany Quenda out of nowhere ahead of the upcoming transfer window.

Manchester United fans had felt that a deal for Geovany Quenda to come to Old Trafford was simply a matter of time.

Ruben Amorim brought the youngster through to the first-team at Sporting and his role in the 3-4-3 system is crucial.

However, those same fans would have been shocked to wake up on Friday morning, after United’s progression to the Europa League quarter-finals, to see that Chelsea had agreed a deal to sign him.

Chelsea, the club who have spent over 1 billion on transfers since 2022, have managed to secure yet another signing.

Under the nose of United, their Premier League rivals reached an agreement with Sporting to sign Quenda on an eight-year contract and he has already had his medical, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Further information from David Ornstein has revealed that Chelsea have spent between £37-42 million on signing the teenager.

It was explained that this was not far away from what United were prepared to offer Sporting for the 17-year-old starlet.

But importantly, somehow, Chelsea have agreed to loan the player back to Sporting for the entire 2025/26 campaign, something that would be extremely attractive to the Portuguese club.

In the end, it is a deal that United simply couldn’t match. The eight year contract, the loan-back and being able to agree a deal months before the transfer window opens is not something the Reds can do at the moment.

United chiefs must find Quenda alternative

It is certainly a shame that Quenda has gone elsewhere as it looked like he would become an important part of the project under Amorim.

Instead, he will become the 200th winger Chelsea have acquired in the last few years. Some have proven to be more successful than others. United loanee Jadon Sancho registered his first shot-on-target of the year in the Europa Conference League this week.

But United have got to look elsewhere and find better value for money. Their transfer strategy has been change and the likes of Jason Wilcox and Omar Berrada should be looking for alternatives ahead of the summer.

They have got time, and while it seemed like Quenda was the main priority, there are certainly going to be other options on the market who can help improve the Reds.
