How Jude Bellingham directly influenced Mason Greenwood’s Getafe loan move
Getafe’s head coach Jose Bordalas has stated that Real Madrid star Jude Bellingham had ‘advised’ Mason Greenwood to move to La Liga from Manchester United.
Greenwood, 21, signed for Spanish side Getafe on a season-long loan after it was decided that he would not play for Manchester United again.
After facing domestic abuse allegations in January 2022, he was dropped from the squad, and following fan backlash in the summer just past, it was decided that he would not reintegrate into Erik ten Hag‘s squad and that the club would help find him a new path to continue his career.
The move was finalised during the final hours of the summer transfer window’s deadline day and Greenwood has since started training with his new club ahead of a return to competitive football for the first time in 19 months.
Jose Bordalas, who has been in charge at Getafe since April this year, has explained that the move to sign the controversial figure came as a ‘surprise’ but hopes he can help the side that finished just outside of the relegation zone last term.
“It was a surprise, we never thought we could get a player like that,” Bordalas told RadioMarca.
“But they got in touch with our sporting director (Ruben Reyes), we talked, we didn’t think it could happen but both sides made an effort [financially].”
Further speaking on how the deal materialised, Bordalas has explained the influence that England international and Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham had in convincing Greenwood it was the right move for him.
“Greenwood is friends with Bellingham, and he advised him to come to the Spanish league,” he added.
The 21-year-old has not only moved to the same league as Bellingham but also now resides in the city of Madrid as well.
A potential debut this coming weekend has also been played down by the manager, who said that he has to remain ‘patient’ with the player.
“He is a fantastic player. You have to be patient, calm, he hasn’t played in a year and a half. We and his colleagues are helping him. He is integrating in a sensational way and I hope he can help us.”
