How Chido Obi fared on Denmark U21s debut after Man Utd starlet praised for “unique qualities”

Manchester United starlet Chido Obi reached another milestone this week after making his debut for Denmark’s Under-21s side against Poland.
Chido Obi is having a season to remember as he progresses through the ranks at Manchester United and with the Denmark setup.
After making the move from Arsenal to United in the summer, Obi was initially with the Under-18s before his impressive performances led him to the Under-21s squad.
The 17-year-old was then gifted an opportunity in Ruben Amorim’s first-team squad due to injuries and has since made four appearances.
He has made debuts in the Premier League and FA Cup – although is not eligible to play in the Europa League – and was rewarded with his first Denmark Under-21s call-up earlier this month.
How Obi fared on Denmark U21s debut
Obi has played 29 games at youth level for Denmark across the U16s, U17s and U18s, with 17 goals across those games.
He made his first appearance for Steffen Højer’s Under-21s side on Thursday afternoon in an eventful 3-3 draw against Poland U21s.
After going 2-0 down, the young Danes fought back to lead 3-2 before conceding a last-minute equaliser to share the spoils in the international clash.
Obi came off the bench for a frantic final 15 minutes, where Denmark scored in the 86th minute before conceding two minutes later.
The United starlet will be hoping to get more game-time next week when Denmark’s U21s side face Italy’s youth in another friendly match.
Obi praised for unique qualities
Ahead of this international break, Denmark’s U21s boss Højer was asked about Obi after his first call-up to the squad.
He explained that United coaches had been in close contact to give details on how Obi is working at Carrington, with particular praise for his “unique qualities” such as his physique.
“I’ve spoken to an assistant coach from United who says that Chido doesn’t hold back when they train over there,” Højer said. “I’m looking forward to seeing him, and I’m also looking forward to giving him the peace he needs now, to just come in and see what this is all about.”
“They have been satisfied with what they have seen in training. He has some unique qualities. He has a wild physique and is a strong finisher, so they have seen that there as well.
“That is why they give him those minutes. Of course there is also a reason why he also gets the minutes at United, because it is not their best year.
“But on the other hand, it also shows something that they still dare to put a 17-year-old Dane on the United team in the situation they are in now. After all, they have done that a few times now.”
