“Hopefully…” – Shea Lacey responds perfectly to praise from Lee Carsley after shining for England U20s

Manchester United’s wonderkid Shea Lacey has responded perfectly after he was asked about praise he received from England’s Under-21s manager Lee Carsley.

Shea Lacey is one of the most exciting talents at Manchester United and he is having a great season for club and country so far.

The 18-year-old winger’s development has been impacted by injuries over the last couple of years but he is currently fully fit and enjoying his football.

Earlier this season, Lacey was rewarded with a call-up to the England senior team to train with Thomas Tuchel’s side. This was before he had even made his debut for the Under-20s team.

The United youngster was then called up to train with Lee Carsley’s Under-21s side earlier this week and he received compliments from the manager.

When discussing why he promoted Lacey to the U21s for training sessions this week, Carsley described the youngster as a player he ‘rates highly’.

Lacey returned to the U20s for their game against Japan on Friday and he scored England’s only goal in a 1-1 draw. It was a brilliant right-footed finish into the far corner.

Speaking to reporter Tom Jolley after the game, Lacey was asked about the compliments he received from Carsley and he responded perfectly, mentioning how he wants to aim for a permanent spot in the U21s squad at England.

“Yeah, it’s good,” began Lacey. “It’s good to join them. Some of them players are top players playing in top leagues, playing every week.

“It’s good to join them but hopefully you want to get the call-up permanently and stay around it.”

Lacey is pushing on the door

The majority of the England U21s set-up does include players who are playing regularly for their clubs in top leagues across Europe.

Lacey’s ambitions are not unrealistic, however. It seems like all of his managers know that he would probably be in a similar spot to those players if it wasn’t for injuries.

At United, he is beginning to push on the door for the first-team and Ruben Amorim is a big fan of the youngster. They have reportedly held several conversations in recent weeks and fans are hoping that he could make his debut when the likes of Amad and Bryan Mbeumo depart for AFCON next month.

For the teenager, he will be hoping that he can keep producing on the pitch and staying fit. If that happens, his progression is something to keep an eye on.
