“His energy is back…” – Gary Lineker has ‘reminded himself’ of how talented one Manchester United star is

Gary Lineker has praised one Manchester United star after the Arsenal clash on the weekend and claimed that he has reminded himself of his talent.

Manchester United fell to Arsenal in their Premier League opener, despite being the side that looked more likely to take the points.

Among the standout performers was Mason Mount, who lined up as the left-sided No.10 with Matheus Cunha leading the line.

After a solid pre-season, Mount looks sharp and ready to make an impact at Old Trafford, showing signs of the player United hoped they were getting two years ago.

Against the Gunners, it wasn’t just his tireless work off the ball that impressed, but also flashes of real quality in possession, including a perfectly weighted through-ball to Bryan Mbeumo in the first half.

Mount’s difficulties at Old Trafford have made it easy for a lot of people to forget that he had won back-to-back Player of the Year awards at Chelsea.

The display against Arsenal looked more like that version of Mount than the one most have been used to seeing at United and it was a reminder to Gary Lineker about the midfielder’s talents.

“He’s had a tough old time, obviously, with injuries and fitness, and he’s not been at it since he went to Manchester United, and even before that, he’s been struggling,” the ex-striker said on The Rest Is Football podcast.

“And you just remind yourself of the talent that he has and how an exciting player he was when he was young at Chelsea, and he was really impressive.

“And I just thought to myself today, it looked like that energy was back. Let’s hope he can stay fit, because there is a footballer in there, there definitely is.”

United squad must improve like Mount

Everyone is rightly talking about the importance of Cunha, Mbeumo and Benjamin Šeško for this season at Old Trafford.

But it is equally crucial for Ruben Amorim to get a tune out of the underperformers from last season. There are plenty of players, like Mount, who can improve their levels.

For the Englishman, consistent football without injuries has been key to his improved form. He ended last term with 14 consecutive appearances.

Others will be looking at Mount and hoping to make similar improvements in order to give Amorim as many selection headaches as possible this season.
