“His choice…” – Antony’s bizarre Erik ten Hag claim debunked by Manchester United statistic

Antony has been speaking about Erik ten Hag, his former Manchester United and Ajax manager, in an interview this week.

Antony faced a tough period at Manchester United after his arrival in 2022, and it was clear that a change was needed when he was barely playing earlier this season.

In response, Ruben Amorim made the decision to loan out the Brazilian winger, with Real Betis snapping him up for the rest of the campaign.

The move has proven to be beneficial for everyone involved. Antony has rediscovered his form, Betis have been climbing the La Liga standings, and United are benefiting from a rise in his market value.

With four goals and four assists in 16 appearances for the Spanish club, Antony has been showcasing an improved level in recent months.

Antony makes bizarre Ten Hag claim

Since his January move, Antony has not been shy with his media duties and has regular spoken about the reasons why he is succeeding in Spain.

He has also blamed his poor time at United on various things and most recently suggested that he did not get enough “opportunities” under Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford.

“Erik ten Hag is a coach I’m very grateful to,” the 25-year-old said when speaking to ESPN this week.

“He helped me a lot in the Netherlands, and in England too, even though the opportunities didn’t come the way I wanted to. But that’s the coach’s choice, I don’t hold any grudges or anything.

“On the contrary, I’m very grateful for everything he’s done with me, for all the conversations too. He’s a coach who will certainly be in this story because he helped me a lot.”

Antony claim debunked by statistics

These comments from Antony are quite bizarre and simply not true. If anything, Ten Hag trusted him too much, as shown by the impact of Amad this season.

In fact, the statistics prove that the Brazilian winger got more than enough chances to prove himself under the Dutch manager.

Ten Hag took charge of 128 games at United and Antony played in 87 of those. It wasn’t like he wasn’t getting enough minutes either – starting 61 of those games.

It is also important to note that during his first two seasons, Antony was only left as an unused substitute six times in total. Ten Hag trusted him until he was almost forced to pick Amad in his final months as United boss – and even then Antony still got opportunities.

The claim from Antony doesn’t really make any sense and the statistics prove that is the case. He got more than enough chances at Old Trafford but simply was never able to take them.
