Hidden reason why Man Utd are open to loaning Harry Amass to struggling Sheffield Wednesday

Manchester United are open to sending Harry Amass on loan to Sheffield Wednesday for the upcoming season and there is a hidden reason behind their stance.

Harry Amass, who made his senior debut for Manchester United last season, is set to spend the new campaign out on loan in pursuit of regular minutes.

The 18-year-old had to bide his time for his breakthrough, finally making his first appearance in March against Leicester City before going on to feature 11 more times before the season’s end.

Following the summer arrival of Diego Leon, United have opted to send Amass out to gain consistent game-time, with the defender left out of Ruben Amorim’s pre-season tour squad.

Sheffield Wednesday have emerged as an option for Amass despite enduring months of unrest amid ongoing issues with owner Dejphon Chansiri.

The Championship club were hit with a transfer embargo after failing to pay players and staff on time, but with the sanction now lifted, the Owls have made a move to bring in Amass on loan for the 2025/26 season.

Hidden reason why United open to loaning Amass to Sheffield Wednesday

When it emerged that Sheffield Wednesday was a genuine option for Amass, many United fans were confused about the potential move.

Complaints have been made about the Yorkshire club’s dire situation and how it would be a bad environment for United’s talented youngster to walk into.

However, reports from BBC Sport have outlined several reasons why those at Old Trafford are open to making this move.

United believe the priority for Amass this season is to build on last year’s appearances by playing regular first-team football – something more likely at Wednesday given their lack of squad depth.

Wage issues at Hillsborough are not seen as a problem, with United prepared to cover Amass’ entire salary until either Chansiri’s finances improve or new owners arrive. As development loans, no fees would be involved either.

The club also see value in Amass experiencing the challenges of a less stable environment, taking them out of the “first-class bubble” that exists at Old Trafford.

Amad’s Rangers loan an example of different benefits

While concerns over the move are understandable, loan decisions should also factor in the wider benefits outlined above.

Amad’s loan to Sunderland is often cited as the springboard for his breakthrough at United, but his more difficult stint at Rangers, where he struggled for game time, could be viewed as equally valuable. That spell tested him mentally and helped shape his development.

When those difficult moments came under Erik ten Hag, where Amad was not being picked despite being deserving of a place in the team, he was more prepared.

Amass is similar in that his talent is unquestionable. A loan to Wednesday could offer the kind of challenges that prepare him for life at Old Trafford in the long term.
