“He’s really keen…” Matthijs De Ligt shares fantastic truth on new ‘improving’ Manchester United star

Manchester United defender Matthijs De Ligt has revealed some truths regarding one of United’s new signings and how they are settling in at the club.

Manchester United’s 2025/26 Premier League campaign is now underway, and hasn’t got off to the start many had hoped it would, given the success of their pre-season tour.

Ruben Amorim’s side have mustered only one point from their opening two games, with that point coming in a 1-1 draw away at Fulham.

Despite new attacking signings Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo impressing the masses in their opening fixtures, neither have opened their accounts for the club, with United’s only goal so far coming from a deflected Leny Yoro header.

One of the Reds’ other new signings, Diego Leon, who is yet to make his professional debut, has been on the receiving end of some kind words from his new teammates.

De Ligt impressed by ‘keen’ Leon

Leon, who is an 18-year-old left-back from Paraguay, signed for the Red Devils in the summer for a fee in the region of £3.3million, which could rise to £7million.,

One of Leon’s new defensive teammates, Matthijs De Ligt, spoke on the youngster, and how keen he is to show off his personality both on and off the field.

The Dutch defender said, via the official United website, “You can see he’s really keen to show his personality on the pitch and that’s really good.

“The more you get into professional football, the more you have to learn tactics and stuff, and that’s obviously difficult when you’re from a different country and speak a different language.

“He’s taking it in well, improving day by day, so let’s hope that he keeps improving.”

Leon’s United future looks bright

The young South American featured in the Red’s pre-season tour of the United States, where he impressed heavily, as well as grabbing an assist for his new side.

It is thought that Leon will spend the season with the U21’s, although he could feature for the first team on the odd occasion, similarly to how many young stars did last campaign.

Tonight may present Leon with his professional debut for United, as the Reds travel to Grimsby Town for their Carabao Cup Second Round tie.

Hopefully for United’s talented teenager, he is able to feature for the first team tonight in their 8pm kick-off (BST), where he will be able to show his new fans more of what he is capable of.
