Ruben Amorim is expected to make a surprise change at Manchester United this season after receiving major criticism last term.
Manchester United have started pre-season strongly this summer, with three games under their belt and the latest win over Bournemouth being extremely impressive.
The Reds are trying hard to put the dismal 2024/25 campaign behind them after a dreadful 15th-placed finish in the Premier League.
Ruben Amorim entered the building in November of last year and he was unable to turn things around immediately at Old Trafford.
There has been sympathy for the Portuguese coach from fans after entering such a difficult job mid-way through the season but he also earned criticism throughout the campaign and it was not just due to the team’s performances on the pitch.
Amorim will make unexpected United change this season
One of the most memorable parts of last season came when Amorim was sitting in the press conference room and told journalists that this United squad could be ‘the worst’ in the club’s history.
It was not the only brutally honest answer Amorim provided over the season and while some fans respected the honesty he provided, others slammed the head coach for providing such ammunition for the media.
Amorim has been a straight-talking man ever since he walked into management and that was hugely appreciated at Sporting, but it seems like he is set to change his ways in the media after learning all about the English press.
This is exactly what respected United journalist Andy Mitten suggested when speaking about Amorim on the latest episode of the Talk of the Devils podcast.
“I think he’s becoming quite private, I think he’s realised the scale of the club, the idea of being an open book… I think he’ll tighten up a little bit to protect himself this year,” Mitten explained.
“I think he’ll do all his contractual stuff, but honestly, I think given a straight choice of whether he sits down with us and does this [interview] he’d probably opt for for a no.
“I think he’s sick of talking and feels like results have got to come.”
Amorim’s media change was inevitable
Amorim’s honesty has been a breath of fresh air for many supporters but the facts are that media duties are a lot different in England to Portugal.
Not only is Amorim doing a lot more speaking, but his words are also being twisted and questions are made to try and trip him up.
When at Sporting, he was asked much more about the tactical side of the game and there was a mutual respect between him and the journalists asking the questions.
It was inevitable that Amorim would adjust in this way due to the way United are treated in the media but many will hope that the United boss will be able to relax once again in those settings if things improve on the pitch.
