“He’s fuming…” – Wayne Rooney says one manager is ‘devastated’ that he won’t get Manchester United job

Wayne Rooney has claimed that one manager is ‘devastated’ that he missed the opportunity to take the managerial role at Manchester United.

Michael Carrick enjoyed a dream beginning to his spell as Manchester United’s caretaker head coach on Saturday afternoon, guiding his side to a dominant victory over Manchester City.

The Reds ran out 2–0 winners, recording their third clean sheet of the season, and could have scored more with three additional goals ruled out for marginal offside decisions.

Despite the intense scrutiny and noise surrounding the build-up to the match, Carrick outmanoeuvred Pep Guardiola at Old Trafford, delivering a memorable and authoritative performance.

While those in charge at United will be delighted with the result, they will also soon be thinking about who they want in the hot-seat once the season ends.

Rooney: Manager is ‘devastated’ that he won’t get United job

Carrick will undoubtably want to secure the permanent head coach position at United but it is too early to see if that would be possible.

There are several other managers linked with the role and United reportedly want their chosen candidate to have experience in the Premier League.

Oliver Glasner has been linked with the job and he made a shock announcement last week that he would be leaving Crystal Palace at the end of the campaign.

Interestingly, Wayne Rooney believes that the FA Cup winning manager is ‘devastated’ that he didn’t announce his intentions earlier as he could have gotten the job at Old Trafford.

“I think what’s happened is that he’s devastated that he didn’t announce he was leaving two weeks ago and then he possibly might have got the chance of getting the Man United job,” Rooney said on his podcast.

“I think he’s gutted because if he came out and said that he was leaving at the end of the season two weeks ago, maybe Man United would have went to him and spoke to him.

“So he’s missed that job and opportunity and I think he’s fuming with that. He’s thinking I can’t afford to let any more opportunities slip.”

Glasner doesn’t suit United

There is one major red flag surrounding Glasner: his only success in the Premier League has come as an underdog with a 3-4-3 formation.

United fans are sick and tired of that shape and loved the fact that Carrick brought back a simple 4-2-3-1 shape against City, with a focus on fast and direct attacks.

If United are going to appoint another head coach in the summer, it has to be someone with more experience than Glasner.

He feels like the kind of manager who would be swallowed up by what United demands from their head coach.
