Manchester United secured Matheus Cunha as their first signing of the summer transfer window and Omar Berrada has been delighted with the move.
After a dreadful 2024/25 campaign, a strong summer transfer window was needed for Manchester United and they got off to a strong start.
The club announced an agreement with Wolves over the transfer of Matheus Cunha on June 1, the opening day of the window, and the forward was then unveiled as a new signing after he returned from international duty later that week.
Cunha scored 15 goals in the Premier League for Wolves last season and plays with a swagger that many United fans are eager to see at Old Trafford.
The 26-year-old had been subject of intense interest from various clubs over the last year, including an approach from Arsenal in January, but ultimately decided to move to the underperforming Reds, which is a trend that frustrates rival fans.
Berrada reveals five reasons why Cunha decided to join United
Omar Berrada spoke to the United We Stand magazine this month – the detailed 70-minute interview can be bought here – and one of the topics which came up was new signing Cunha.
The United chief executive was able to detail five key reasons why the player opted to come to Old Trafford over other potential destinations.
“Because he’s convinced by what we’re trying to do,” replied Berrada when asked why the Brazilian international decided to join the club.
“He’s convinced by our ambition, by Ruben as a coach, Jason’s vision for the squad, our ownership and management team.
“The idea for how we’re going to grow and stabilise the club, not because we’re in the Champions League one year or not.
“So on players, I don’t think we’ll find it more difficult. And the ones that don’t want to come here because we’re not in the Champions League, we probably don’t want them.”
A similar story with Mbeumo
It has been a similar story with Bryan Mbeumo, who is on the verge of a United move after telling the likes of Newcastle and Tottenham his preference was the Reds.
United has been described as a ‘dream’ move for the Brentford star, who has shown appreciation to the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney in interviews beforehand.
The lure of the club is still strong, but as Berrada suggested, the Reds are also providing the picture of a strong project at Old Trafford.
It seems to be working in terms of getting these players through the door, and now we wait to see whether it’s going to be visible on the pitch next season.
