“He isn’t the answer…” Manchester United urged not to make transfer move Wayne Rooney recommended
Manchester United have been told to look beyond Danny Welbeck if they are to improve their frontline in the coming summer transfer window.
Welbeck, who signed a new contract at Brighton in May of last year, was a product of the Red Devils‘ famous youth system and has on occasion been touted with a move back to Manchester.
It’s a move that fellow former United striker Wayne Rooney has publicly backed, with the club’s all-time top scorer telling the BBC the following when working on their Match of the Day coverage:
“Danny [Welbeck], he’s great to play alongside and if I’m being completely honest, I would probably still like to see him here playing for Manchester United.
“He scored goals throughout his career, had injuries in the early part of his career, but seems to have got over them and he’s having a fantastic season.”
Since leaving Manchester United in 2014, Welbeck has gone on to play in the Premier League for Arsenal, Watford and Brighton where he now plays. In the decade since he left Old Trafford, the 34-year-old striker has scored 46 Premier League goals, five of which have been against United.
One former Brighton manager disagrees
Though many, including Rooney, see a move back to Manchester as an astute bit of business for the club and player, former Brighton manager Gus Poyet disagrees.
Speaking with mybettingsites, Poyet was quick to rule out the suggestion that Welbeck could solve United’s issues.
“Welbeck isn’t the solution to Manchester United’s problems. I completely disagree with Wayne. Maybe he knows more than me, but from the outside looking in, the answer isn’t Danny Welbeck.”
This season, Welbeck’s seven Premier League goals put him ahead of all but one Manchester United player, with only Bruno Fernandes scoring more than the Englishman so far this season.
If not Welbeck, then who?
Though Poyet made it clear he does not see a future in which United should be targetting Welbeck, he did confess that one of Welbeck’s current teammates could be of the quality the Reds need.
Discussing a potential move for Japan and Brighton star Kaoru Mitoma, Poyet admitted he believes that United and the attacker could be a perfect fit.
“In terms of quality, he’s good enough for Manchester United,” Poyet declared. “The question is, can he take the next step and perform at an even higher level, as a club like United demands?
“He’s a top player, and I hope he does because he’s so important to Brighton. I love watching him play.”
