Harry Maguire’s future at Manchester United remains in the air as the centre-back enters the final months of his current contract.
Since the arrival of Michael Carrick, Manchester United have enjoyed a fantastic couple of weeks, with the Reds putting both Arsenal and Manchester City to the sword.
The Reds, who are now fourth in the Premier League, have adopted a more conventional 4-2-3-1 system and the defence has looked much-improved.
City and Arsenal barely created any clear-cut chances across the last two games, and that has also coincided with the return of Harry Maguire to the team.
Maguire recently returned from injury but has played brilliantly in the last two fixtures, helping the team to win both games.
Maguire’s stance on wage reduction revealed
Maguire, 32 and soon to be 33, will be a free agent in the summer if his contract at Old Trafford is not renewed in the coming months.
The experienced central defender currently earns around £190,000-a-week at United and that is the major stumbling block in any new deal.
United would almost certainly want Maguire’s leadership in the dressing room for at least another year, while his profile is also very useful in certain situations, as shown with the victories against City and Arsenal.
According to Ben Jacobs, as per The United Stand, Maguire is waiting for a formal contract extension offer after talks last year but United intentionally delayed because they are assessing that position.
It was added that Maguire is ready to sign and be flexible on his terms. He would like his future sorted as soon as possible and it remains possibly that an extension is tabled.
Maguire’s experience can be important
It remains to be seen whether Maguire will receive a contract offer from United but it seems like he’s willing to take a pay cut.
That could be key as United will not extend on his current wages. Still, the Reds need to think about the importance of leadership in a dressing room.
Casemiro is leaving at the end of the season and there will be a limited amount of experienced players in the United squad. Maguire being around the group could be useful.
