Harry Maguire’s Manchester United future ‘up in the air’ as offer received from European giants

Manchester United want to extend Harry Maguire’s contract, but his future is currently uncertain.

Manchester United currently sit in fourth on 45 points in the Premier League and, more importantly, in a Champions League spot as the club looks to return to Europe’s most prestigious competition.

United are currently on a five-game unbeaten run as they look to extend the good form against the high-flying Everton at the Hill-Dickinson stadium as they mount a charge for European football of their own.

Ahead of the summer, United not only need to begin focusing on incomings, but also potential outgoings and whether they extend certain players’ contracts.

With Casemiro already confirmed to be leaving upon the expiry of his contract, the situation surrounding Harry Maguire continues to be up in the air, with his contract also up in the summer.

Maguire receives offer from AC Milan

The Englishman has cemented himself alongside Lisandro Martinez as a vital figure at the back for Manchester United. His return to the side and partnership with the Argentine have coincided with the return to good form under Michael Carrick.

However, his contract situation continues to become more and more precarious as the summer and ultimately the end of his current deal edge closer.

Chris Wheeler has spoken to The United Stand and reported that both the club and player want to extend his contract, but the length of his contract and wage reduction, given his age, is what the decision will rest on.

Wheeler also reported that the player has received offers from other sides, naming AC Milan as one suitor. He suggested that if there is an offer elsewhere that trumps the one United offer, then he would have no choice but to take the better offer at another club.

Maguire’s renewal should be top priority

With Maguire turning 33 this year, it is paramount that any deal is on the right terms for both parties. His renewal should be the top priority for the club and not just for the simple on-pitch reasons.

Of course, he has shown over the last two years that he has returned to his best form and if anything, he is playing better right now than at any other point in his United career.

However, it is for off-the-pitch reasons that his renewal becomes more important. The club are already losing Casemiro, who will be leaving a huge void in terms of experience and leadership in the squad. United have a youthful squad, and these experienced players have been the ones, time and time again, to get the club out of trouble.

With talk of Bruno Fernandes’s future being up in the air also until after the World Cup, the club cannot afford to lose huge personalities like the three mentioned.

While they are doing well this season, Chelsea over the last few years has had instability caused by a lack of experienced voices in the squad, which is something United need to avoid.
