Harry Maguire has lifted the lid on exactly what is missing under Rúben Amorim at Manchester United, which must be addressed in the summer transfer market.

Rúben Amorim’s first three months at Manchester United have been anything but smooth since replacing Erik ten Hag.

Taking charge in mid-November with United struggling in 13th place in the Premier League and winning just once in the Europa League, the 40-year-old set out to rebuild a team in need of direction.

There have been positives, including impressive away victories over Arsenal and Manchester City, but inconsistency has plagued United’s league campaign, with some fans growing frustrated. Amorim’s side have won just five of their 16 Premier League matches so far, though their performances in the Europa League and FA Cup have been more promising.

Off the pitch, the challenges have been just as significant. Three senior attackers departed on loan in the winter transfer window without replacements arriving, while Lisandro Martínez and Amad have been ruled out for the rest of the season through injury.

Maguire speaks on United’s leadership

Speaking ahead of United’s FA Cup encounter with Fulham on Sunday afternoon, Harry Maguire was asked about his relationship with club Bruno Fernandes.

The United defender explains that his relationship with Fernandes is excellent despite the Portuguese international taking over his role as captain last season. He was further asked who the leaders are at United.

“I think we have a lot of leaders,” Maguire explained. Obviously, we’ve got Casemiro, who won everything. Great leader, good attitude. Bruno himself.

“We have a lot of senior players. Tom Heaton, Jonny Evans. At the moment, we know it’s a difficult period and that’s when we, as senior and older players, have got to take the responsibility on and step up.”

Maguire’s words show a massive issue

Maguire explaining that three of the club’s best leaders are Casemiro, Evans, and Heaton shows a gaping issue in United’s squad.

None of these three players are regular first-team members, with Casemiro playing a minor on-field role under Amorim while Evans and Heaton are out with injuries and are reserve options within the squad.

This means that the club have very few leaders on the pitch, which is no doubt a big reason why the side are failing to produce a good string of results. There are few on the field that are able to guide young players such as Alejandro Garnacho or Rasmus Højlund through bouts of poor form.

Although the cluba re focusing on signing young players who will grow into good playesr for the club, United must also look to bring in players who have leadership and experience under their belts in the summer window.

Previously, signings such as Edinson Cavani, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, and Casemiro’s first season at the club have shown that players with experience can help lift youngsters around them, which Amorim will need if United want to bring in young stars.
