Harry Maguire has made a bizarre claim about Manchester United’s performance against Wolverhampton Wanderers that fans will disagree with.

Manchester United slumped to their third consecutive defeat as Rúben Amorim’s side fell 2-0 to Wolverhampton Wanderers in a Premier League Boxing Day clash.

Despite creating a few early opportunities through Noussair Mazraoui and Amad Diallo, United were second-best for much of the first half, with Wolves looking more composed and in control.

Goalless at the break, the match took a decisive turn early in the second half. Bruno Fernandes was sent off for a second yellow card just minutes after the restart, leaving United to battle with ten men.

As has been a recurring issue this season, United’s vulnerability from set pieces was exposed again. Matheus Cunha delivered a rare direct goal from a corner kick, breaking the deadlock less than ten minutes after the red card.

In response, Amorim made several substitutions, pushing his team forward in search of an equaliser. However, Wolves remained resolute in defence, repelling wave after wave of United attacks.

Late drama ensued when Harry Maguire appeared to be brought down in the box, but VAR dismissed United’s penalty appeals. Wolves capitalised on the visitors’ desperation in injury time, with Hwang Hee-chan scoring a second to secure a well-earned 2-0 victory for the hosts.

Maguire’s bold claim about United vs Wolves

Speaking to Amazon after the fixture, United defender Harry Maguire explained he feels United were the better side on the night, and even despite the red card, his club gave Wolves very little.

“I think the red card’s changed the game,” Maguire explained. “It felt like we had control in the first half, without doing too much with it.

“They hit us with a few counter-attacks, and had a couple of dangerous players in wide areas. But we spoke about it at half-time and I felt like, going into the second half, we needed to up it a little bit and, yeah, the red card’s changed the game.

“It’s hard enough playing with 11 men in the Premier League, but when you go down to 10 it’s tough. If we’re being honest, we gave them nothing. They had nothing; they created nothing when it was 11 v 10.

“Obviously, [them] scoring from a corner and with the last kick of the game is tough to take. But we’ve got to stick together and look forward to the next one.”

Fans will disagree with Maguire

Although Maguire may feel this way, a lot of fans will disagree with his sentiment as United looked uninspired and unimaginative.

In the first half, as the 30-year-old said, United were the more dominant team, but failed to do anything with the ball. striker Rasmus Højlund looked visibly frustrated that his teammates would not feed him through.

In the second half, when the club went down to ten men, they were chaperoned by Wolves’ defence with ease, failing to create anything despite substituting on attacking players and a goal down.

The club went 1-0 down with plenty of time to play, so celebrating defensive acumen with ten men while a goal down is a moot victory and a bizarre positive to take away from the game. United needed to score, and it never looked like that was going to happen.
