Harry Maguire ‘makes transfer decision’ as verdict given on his chances under Rúben Amorim
Harry Maguire has reportedly made his decision surrounding his immediate future at Manchester United as a verdict is given on his playing time under Rúben Amorim.
It’s been almost five and a half years since Manchester United officially signed Harry Maguire from Leicester City in an £80 million transfer, which is still a world-record fee for a defender.
Despite winning two trophies under Erik ten Hag, Maguire’s time at the club is seen as one that has failed to live up to expectations, considering the extraordinary fee the club forked out for his services in 2019.

The Dutch boss stripped him of his captaincy in the summer of 2023, with Bruno Fernandes taking the reigns from the English international, but his prominence has somewhat resurged over the last 18 months.
However, an injury in October has meant he has not played a part in a very turbulent few weeks for the club.
Maguire’s decision under Amorim
With new head coach Rúben Amorim taking the reigns of the club’s squad from 11 November onwards, many have been theorising how the current players would fit into the 3-4-2-1 system that he deploys at Sporting.
According to TBRFootball, regardless of Amorim’s intentions, Maguire has decided that he is determined to stay at United during the January transfer window and prove himself to the new boss.
Maguire’s current contract expires at the end of this season, but the club can extend it for a further year if they choose to.
However, even if the club do not immediately trigger this extension, it is said that Maguire will not flirt with the idea of leaving Old Trafford and will not engage in pre-contract talks with any other club, which he would be free to do from 1 January 2025.
Maguire verdict given
However, Maguire may have to heed a warning from former Liverpool centre-back Jamie Carragher. Carragher has explained that he and fellow defender Matthijs de Ligt cannot play together in Amorim’s back-three, reducing Maguire’s playing time.
“I actually think Martínez in this position, I’ve mentioned this before, it might suit him [as he] gives you that balance with a left foot,” Carragher said in relation to the back three..
“I can’t see De Ligt or Maguire being in the wide positions; they can’t. They will not be able to cope. So, I don’t think De Ligt or Maguire could play in the same back three, because whoever was in the wide position will get really exposed.”
