Harry Maguire opens up on what he believes has been the toughest moment of his career following a season marred with injury at Manchester United.

Like many of Manchester United‘s squad last campaign, Harry Maguire spent around two months on the sidelines with two separate injuries, missing a total of 11 fixtures under Erik ten Hag.

2023/24 is a season to forget for the most part, with key players such as Lisandro Martínez, Luke Shaw, and Casemiro all facing significant time on the treatment table.

However, while those mentioned above were able to recover to play in either the FA Cup final against Manchester City or their respective countries during the international tournaments, Maguire had to miss both due to an injury he sustained towards the end of the campaign.

Maguire is well known as a mainstay in the England squad but missed out as Gareth Southgate’s men clawed their way to the final of the 2024 European Championships.

“Probably the toughest moment in my career to date, really,” he told Sky Sports in an honest interview when asked how he felt having to miss out on the tournament despite originally being fit enough to make the provisional squad.

“To get myself in a position where all year I’ve worked hard to play at the end of the season, to play in these big games, the Cup Finals, and then go to the Euros and try and win the tournament for my country.

“I felt I got myself in a great position physically and mentally to go and perform at the highest level. And to face the setback that I did with the injury, yeah, it was a real tough, tough, tough moment for me.

“Obviously, all summer, you just see the Euros being played, so you can’t really go hiding from it all. But yeah, I have great friends, great family, I have great support around me, and I enjoyed my holidays, even though, like I said, it was a tough moment for myself mentally in my career.

“I managed to watch the games. I think they’re such important games. I’ve been a massive England fan throughout my life, so… Yeah, it was obviously so hard not to be there.”

Harry Maguire was part of the United squad that flew to the USA on Wednesday afternoon. They will face Arsenal, Real Betis, and Liverpool before flying home to face Manchester City at Wembley Stadium on Saturday, 10 August.
