Harry Maguire makes Old Trafford demand as Red Devils look to avoid embarrassing record
Harry Maguire has admitted Manchester United need to make Old Trafford a fortress again if they hope to avoid an embarrassing record.
Despite winning all six cup home games the Red Devils have played so far this season, Ruben Amorim’s squad have consistently tasted defeat at home in the Premier League.
With Amorim only appointed as United manager back in November of last year, the Premier League side’s head coach has reached five home defeats in the competition faster than any previous United boss.
In an FA Cup tie on Friday, United would come from behind to beat Leicester 2-1, ensuring the defending FA Cup champions maintained their place in this year’s competition.
But, it was United’s poor overall performance in the first half that led Maguire to admit the team needs to improve their home showings immediately.
What did Maguire have to say?
Speaking to members of the media following United’s 2-1 victory over Leicester, the former United captain did not hide away from the worrying home form the Red Devils have shown of late.
Conceding a poor goal after fourty-two minutes, United failed to start in a positive manner and were outclassed at home by a rotated Leicester side. It would take a rebounded goal from Joshua Zirkzee and a dubious stoppage-time winner from Maguire for United to secure their place in the fifth round of the cup.
“Obviously we can’t be starting games like that at Old Trafford,” Maguire admitted. “I think the run of results at Old Trafford has been so poor that I think now the boys have lost maybe that confidence of playing in front of a crowd and things.
“It’s something we need to address because if we want to be a successful team we’ve got to make it hard for teams to come here and play and the first half wasn’t good.”
How many home games do Manchester United need to win?
With thirteen Premier League home games played, United have won just five and will need to win all six of their remaining home fixtures to beat last season’s ten home victories.
Last failing to win ten or more Prem home games back in 2019/20, as things stand United will need to win at least four more home games to beat 2016/17’s worst-ever total of 8 wins.
Manchester United’s remaining Premier League home games are as follows:
Ipswich, Arsenal, Manchester City, Wolves, West Ham, Aston Villa.
In the away ties against those six clubs, United have picked up just five points. The Red Devils picked up their sole victory against Manchester City, would draw against both Villa and Ipswich, with losses coming against Arsenal, Wolves and West Ham.
