Harry Maguire has echoed the opinions of one of his Manchester United teammates when asked about the clubs’ new signing Senne Lammens.
Manchester United entered the summer transfer window in search of a new goalkeeper and ultimately secured the signing of highly rated 23-year-old Senne Lammens.
The Belgian caught United’s eye after a standout season with Royal Antwerp, but adapting to the intensity of Premier League football will be a significant challenge.
With André Onana sent out on loan, Altay Bayındır has retained the starting spot. The Turkish international has played all Premier League games so far this season but has not impressed.
Lammens, meanwhile, has been included on the bench in recent games and will be determined to seize his chance when it comes as Ruben Amorim continues his hunt for stability and dependability in the goalkeeping department.
Maguire completely agrees with United teammate about Lammens
Lammens has been making a positive impression behind the scenes at Carrington since his arrival abd received praise from veteran goalkeeper Tom Heaton recently.
The 39-year-old praised his fellow shot-stopper’s ‘goalkeeping fundamentals’ and Harry Maguire has echoed that praise in a new interview.
“I’ve been so impressed with [Lammens] in training. I think he has all the fundamentals to be a really, really top class goalkeeper. He’s great with his feet, he’s a big presence, he’s a really great shot-stopper,” Maguire told Sky Sports.
“I think he’s got all the fundamentals to be excellent. Again he’s another young boy. He’s coming to such a big club with lots of pressure. But I know he will deal with it and I’m sure he’s going to have a long future at this club.”
Some fans are hoping that Lammens is given his debut against Brentford on the weekend but it feels like the home clash against Sunderland next week makes more sense for the Belgian ‘keeper to play.
Goalkeeping fundamentals will help Lammens succeed
The goalkeeping positon has developed greatly over the last 10 years and the signing of Onana in 2022 was a clear attempt for United to have a player who meets those new demands.
But with the Cameroon ‘keeper, it felt like United lost someone who did the basic things well. Parrying shots wide, using your feet to make certain saves. Even the way Onana dived for shots in the top corners had questionable technique.
Hearing that Lammens is impressive in the fundamentals is a good sign and something that he will need to succeed at Old Trafford.
Of course, it would be brilliant if he can be a ball-player and make incredible saves too, but at the moment, United are just looking for some consistency and someone who can do the simple things well, and Lammens will hope that he can bring exactly that.
