Manchester United are expected to make their decision on Harry Amass’ future at Sheffield Wednesday soon, with the current 5 January deadline looming.
Manchester United experienced a busy summer transfer window, adding four new players to the first-team squad, with Senne Lammens arriving in a late deadline-day deal.
The club also sanctioned several notable exits. Alejandro Garnacho completed a move to Chelsea, while Antony departed for Real Betis, with both deemed surplus to Rúben Amorim’s long-term vision.
United were equally active in the loan market, sending out a number of academy talents on temporary deals to accelerate their development through regular first-team football.
The summer also marked a new beginning for Jonny Evans, who took on the role of Head of Loans and Pathways after retiring. Under his leadership, 14 academy players have gone out on loan for the current campaign.
Decision on Amass’ future expected soon
Harry Amass has impressed since joining Sheffield Wednesday on deadline day last summer, with the full-back having started every Championship game this season. The “exciting talent” was also named as the club’s Player of the Month in November.
Given the financial turmoil Sheffield Wednesday faced at the start of the season, United agreed to cover all costs of the deal.
Although it is a season-long loan, the deal will expire on 5 January due to a break clause. It is now up to Manchester United to decide whether Amass should remain in Sheffield or return to his boyhood club and join a different side for the remainder of the season.
As reported by Manchester World, the Reds have been in regular contact with Amass’s loan side regarding his development, but have not yet made a final decision.
As the 18-year-old has integrated himself so well into his loan side, it could be seen as a risk to recall him and send him to a different time for the rest of the season, as the youngster continues to improve in the Championship.
Sheffield Wednesday manager’s stance on Amass’ future
Speaking ahead of his side’s recent fixture in the Championship, Wednesday boss Henrik Pedersen speculated on the delay in United’s decision on what to do with Amass, suggesting that ongoing contract talks could be the reason behind the delay, but also understands that it could be simply down to the two parties being unsure as to what to do in January.
“There is contact between Sheffield Wednesday and Man United, and I hope in the next one or two weeks we can come closer to something here,” Pedersen told the Sheffield Star.
“I think there is something between Manchester United and Harry that they have to find out before we can make the next step,” he continued.
“I hope it will be found out in the short term. There could be something with the contract between Harry and Manchester United, but let’s see what happens. I think we will find a solution – I really hope.”
While it could be too soon to become a regular starter at his boyhood club, Diogo Dalot and Patrick Dorgu’s struggles at left wing-back could advance Amass’ pathway into the first-team, and the delay could be down to deciding whether he is ready to play regular first-team minutes at Old Trafford or not.
