Harry Amass has dropped a cryptic message following strange comments from Rúben Amorim about the Manchester United Academy starlet.
Rúben Amorim has come under scrutiny from sections of Manchester United’s support following recent comments about the club’s Academy.
Speaking ahead of the clash with Bournemouth, the 40-year-old addressed criticism of his handling of young players over the past year. In doing so, he cited Harry Amass as having “struggled” in the Championship and noted that Chido Obi has “not always” been a regular starter for the club’s U21s.
Those remarks have since been challenged by supporters. Amass was named Sheffield Wednesday’s Player of the Month for November, while Obi has spent much of the past six weeks sidelined through injury.
More broadly, United have received praise for the structure and execution of their loan strategy this season, with several academy prospects impressing at clubs across the English football pyramid.
Amass responds to Amorim with simple message
Amass joined United’s Academy from Watford as a 16-year-old and slotted into the U18s squad well, before making his senior debut with a fantastic display away from home against Newcastle toward the back end of last season.
He was linked with a move away from United on loan until the very end of the transfer window, when a temporary deal until Wednesday was agreed.
He has since established himself as one of the first names on the team sheet each week, with manager Henrik Pedersen even stating that the teen had become “a different human” during his opening months at the club.
After Amorim’s rather strange comment about his time in the Championship, Amass released a since-deleted photo of him holding Wednesday’s Player of the Month award for November, where he collected 79% of the fan vote, with a simple smile emoji to accompany the image.
Possible Amorim change could work in Amass’ favour
Amass’ style of play has often been compared to that of senior left-back Luke Shaw, who is known for his speed, technical ability, and brilliant delivery – all traits that suit a traditional wing-back or attacking full-back.
According to The Athletic, Amorim is now starting to consider changing his formation from a 3-4-2-1 to a 4-3-3, which would drastically change the instructions for those out wide.
While those like Amad and Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu have been operating as wing-backs, a return to a back four could be a massive benefit for the likes of Shaw, Dalot and possibly Amass, as it’s the position in which all three players often thrive most.
Amass’ current loan move with Sheffield Wednesday actually expires at the beginning of January. However, reports indicate that both United and the other parties involved in the deal are happy with his progress, meaning he’s likely to remain in the Championship for the rest of the campaign.
However, Amass will rejoin the Old Trafford club after the end of the season and showcase his maturity to Amorim firsthand in pre-season training.
