Manchester United went into the break drawing 1-1 with Wolverhampton Wanderers, and Mason Mount has revealed what Rúben Amorim told his squad to spur the team on to score three times in the second half.
Rúben Amorim enjoyed his biggest win of the season on Monday night as Manchester United cruised past Wolverhampton Wanderers with a dominant four-goal performance in the Premier League.
United started brightly and dictated the tempo from the outset. After 20 minutes of sustained pressure, Bruno Fernandes opened the scoring after excellent pressing from Matheus Cunha, although the finish itself was far from straightforward.
Bryan Mbeumo, Cunha, and Amad all went close soon after, but Wolves struck next. Jean-Ricner Bellegarde equalised on the brink of half-time, ending the hosts’ eight-hour Premier League scoring drought.
Both sides returned unchanged for the second half, but United emerged with far greater urgency. Mbeumo restored the lead with a composed effort, and moments later, Mason Mount extended the advantage following a brilliant Fernandes assist.
The evening ended with a flourish when United earned a penalty with ten minutes to play. Fernandes converted confidently from the spot, sealing the club’s most emphatic victory of the campaign and lifting them into sixth place in the table.
What Rúben Amorim said to his side at halftime
United were brilliant in the second half, a far cry from the disappointing opening 45 minutes that we saw at the Molineux stadium.
While he was quite quiet in the first half, Mason Mount performed much better after the break, latching onto a great Fernandes cross into the box to finish well past Sam Johnstone in the Wolves net.
Speaking after the game, the 26-year-old revealed the squad’s reaction to the first half in the dressing room, and what Amorim did to spur his side on.
“It was an important win for us, obviously, first half, we let them back in it before halftime, and we go in into the change room frustrated and disappointed with that, the end to the first half.
“Yeah, the manager had a few things to say, and we came out there, and it was down to us to really attack with a purpose and finish these chances that we were creating. So yeah, I think we’re happy with the second half. I thought in parts the first half as well. So yeah, overall, very happy with that.”
Mason Mount has earned a starting spot in the side
Awarded Man Of The Match on the night, Mount has finally managed to string a number of games together this season after missing over 50 games since joining United from Chelsea in 2023.
Mount operated as a false nine against Wolves, displaying great technique to grab his goal, looking like a natural forward as he grabbed his second goal of the season.
United’s side will be significantly weakened by AFCON, which gets underway in just over a week, with the club losing Mbeumo, Amad and Noussair Mazraoui until mid-January should their respective nations go deep in the tournament.
While it would be expected that Fernandes would be pushed further forward, allowing Kobbie Mainoo to slot into the midfield pivot, the 20-year-old could still see his minutes limited by Mount’s recent performances. His versatility across the front line could see Fernandes remain as a deeper playmaker in the side, and play in some excellent crosses, as we saw against Wolves.
