Godwill Kukonki sends message to Sekou Kone after making return for Manchester United U21s
Sekou Kone played his first minutes for Manchester United’s Under-21s this weekend since suffering injury in November.
Kone, 18, became a surprise deadline-day signing for Manchester United last summer, arriving from Guidars FC for a reported fee of around £1 million.
The teenager’s arrival generated excitement among United fans, despite limited familiarity with the midfielder.
Kone impressed with standout performances at the 2023 U17 World Cup, capturing the attention of United’s scouting team.
His signing highlighted a change in United’s recruitment strategy under INEOS ownership, focusing on deals the club had often overlooked in the past.
Since his arrival, Kone has played a handful of games for the youth teams and recently returned to the field after a period of time injured.
Kone makes return from injury for United U21s
The Mali youth international suffered injury against Huddersfield Town first-team three months ago and was pictured with crutches after the game.
Thankfully, it was soon confirmed that the issue was not too serious and the Christmas break afterwards offered the opportunity for the teenager to recover properly.
United’s U21s side hosted Aston Villa in the Premier League 2 on Saturday afternoon and Kone started the clash. He came off after 79 minutes.
Travis Binnion’s side won 2-1 after a brace from Sam Mather but highlights of the clash are not yet available for viewing.
Kukonki sends Kone message
After completing his return to the pitch, Kone took to Instagram, writing: “I thank God for my return to the field after my injury, I am ready to give my all again inshallah🙏🔥❤️💪✌🏽”
Many Academy teammates flooded to the comments, including 16-year-old centre-back Godwill Kukonki, who also took part in the game.
Kukonki also played 79 minutes of the clash and responded to Kone’s post with a love-heart emoji. The likes of Jack Fletcher and Amir Ibragimov also commented.
The 16-year-old centre-back has featured in Ruben Amorim’s first team squad on several occasions now and will be eyeing a debut later this season.
Kone, now that he is back fit, will also be looking to impress and get more chances with the first-team squad at Carrington.
