Gary Neville has echoed the opinions of many Manchester United fans by urging the club to make two ‘unique’ signings for Ruben Amorim.

Ruben Amorim became Manchester United’s manager in November and has encountered challenges in his early matches at Old Trafford.

In his first 11 games, the team has managed just four wins, reflecting the difficulties of adjusting to Amorim’s system.

While a few players, like Amad Diallo and Noussair Mazraoui, have shown promise and potential for long-term roles under the Portuguese coach, the struggles of many others highlight the pressing need for reinforcements in future transfer windows.

We are yet to see what Amorim’s system truly looks like but it is already clear that the two wingback positions are the most important on the pitch.

Neville highlights wingback signings as priority at United

That is a major reason why the Reds have struggled to adapt so far – the options in those positions are underwhelming.

Diogo Dalot does not appear to suit the role and Mazraoui looked better when playing in the back three. Amad has been the only real bright spark in that position but his long-term position is further forward.

This is something that fans have quickly identified and Gary Neville believes that it is the priority for the club.

He believes that the wingbacks ‘hold together’ Amorim’s system, and that they need to be ‘unique’ players to help maximise the team.

Speaking after Monday’s defeat to Newcastle, Neville told Sky Sports: “I could say centre-forward, let’s get a world-class centre-forward, let’s get Isak in, but that’s never going to happen.

“I think if you were starting, you’d have to start with the fundamentals of this system, which is the wing-backs, they hold it together.

“If you don’t have the wing-backs functioning up and down that are able to attack and defend equally as good, and there aren’t many of those around, by the way, because there aren’t many teams that play wing-back, then you’re going to struggle.

“So, you need two quite unique players in those wide areas, and I think that will be the starting point.

“And that’s nothing against [Noussair] Mazraoui or [Diogo] Dalot, I think they’re very willing and doing the job the very best that they can. But they’re to me the areas that I would start in this system.”

Players such as Nuno Mendes and Alvaro Fernandez have been linked with a move to Old Trafford, but sales are needed to push through for any mid-season signings.
