Gary Neville has singled out one Manchester United player for criticism after their 1-0 defeat to Arsenal in the Premier League, as the player’s mistake led to the only goal of the game, ultimately gifting the away side three points.
Arsenal will walk away from Old Trafford today wondering how on earth they have managed to get three points, as the home side dominated the game for large parts. Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha shone, while Mason Mount had his best performance in a red shirt.
Elsewhere, after Carl Anka’s question yesterday in the pre-match press conference, Matthijs De Ligt inverting into midfield as the middle center back actually had a positive impact on the game. It’s a good sign for Ruben Amorim’s system going forward, particularly with the bounce passes.
United will be ruing some of their missed chances, particularly Matheus Cunha’s shot across David Raya’s goal in the first half. Mbeumo also went close, but it wasn’t to be on the day for the Reds.
Gary Neville believes one player cost United the game due to his error, and believes errors like this will keep costing Amorim and his side unless they are addressed.
Gary Neville speaks on Bayindir error
Gary Neville has made his point clear on Altay Bayindir’s error after United’s 1-0 loss to Arsenal, detailing that the Turkish keeper needs to be stronger in the box.
Speaking on Sky Sports during the game, Neville had the following to say about the error, which came from an well lofted Declan Rice cross into the box, which Bayindir palmed into the path of Riccardo Calafiori.
“It’s going to keep hurting United,” said Neville, “The goalkeeper has got to be stronger. I think he will complain that he was fouled. He’s got a player in front of him, there’s a lot of pushing and shoving going on. I just think your goalkeeper has to be stronger.”
“Get that player out of the way. It’s Saliba. He’s not got his arms up, I don’t think he’s done anything wrong at all. Bayandir if anything has his arm on him. He just parries it, it goes through his hands. It’s definitely a goal. He’s just not strong enough.”
Manchester United have been linked to a number of new number ones in recent days, but have yet to make a concrete move to sign anyone as of yet.
Senne Lammens and Gianluigi Donnarumma have been of interest to the side from Manchester, as well as Emiliano Martinez previously in the window. Andre Onana wants to stay at the club, and is not expected to leave before deadline day.
A new keeper is vital for Amorim
Mistakes from keepers have cost United too often in recent seasons, and it needs to be addressed once and for all. It’s an ongoing issue dating back to David De Gea’s final years at the club, which can no longer be ignored.
Senne Lammens represents the best value and risk option on the market. Talks have taken place with his agency in recent months, but a concrete offer is still some way off by the looks of things at the moment.

A midfielder remains United’s priority despite missing out on Carlos Baleba, with Adam Wharton expected to be someone they pivot to next. Ederson from Atalanta remains a target, with interest in the player dating back to before the window opened.
United need a keeper and a midfielder before deadline day, or Ruben Amorim could continue to be put under pressure in his position at the club.
