“Absolutely alarming…” Gary Neville stunned after hearing Manchester United stat under Rúben Amorim
Gary Neville admits that he was stunned at an “absolutely alarming” statistic that emerged surrounding Rúben Amorim’s time at Manchester United so far.
Rúben Amorim’s first two months at Manchester United have been anything but smooth since succeeding Erik ten Hag.
Taking charge in mid-November with United struggling in 13th place in the Premier League and managing just one win in the Europa League, the 40-year-old set out to steady the ship and rebuild a club in crisis.
There have been encouraging moments, including impressive away victories over Arsenal and Manchester City, but inconsistency continues to be a concern. Under Amorim, United have won nine of their first 19 matches, losing eight and drawing two.
Off the pitch, the challenges have been just as significant. Three senior attackers have left on loan during the winter transfer window without replacements coming in, while Lisandro Martínez faces the prospect of missing the rest of the season with a knee injury.
However, there have been some positives. United finally addressed their need for a left wing-back by signing Patrick Dorgu, while 18-year-old centre-back Ayden Heaven has arrived as a promising prospect for the future.
Neville alarmed at Amorim statistic
Former United captain Gary Neville has always been a vocal person surrounding his opinions of the club, and he has questioned Amorim’s methods on multiple occasions since the head coach joined.
Speaking on his recent podcast, Neville admitted that he feels Amorim now cannot change his principles because he’s dug so deep into them, but he was stunned to hear that he’s now lost more games at United than his last 75 fixtures as Sporting CP manager.
“You can’t keep losing. You just can’t,” Neville started. “I mean, it will depress the thoughts of the players to a point whereby they’ll start to lose faith in the idea and it’ll damage him. It’ll damage him for the start of next year.
“I don’t know, he has to do something. He can’t change his approach now because he’s died in a ditch on it. And rightly so.
“He’s lost more games at Manchester United since he’s come than he lost in the last 75 at Sporting Lisbon, I think. I read that stat earlier, which is just absolutely alarming. So he will not be enjoying this.”
What is a good season for United now?
United currently sit 13th in the league table, one point off Crystal Palace above them and five points off Brighton, who sit bottom of the top half of the table.

In the league, a good finish for United now would be to climb back into the top half of the Premier League table. They finished 8th last campaign, which is their lowest-ever finishing position in the competition, and it feels as if it’s inevitable that this record will be broken.
Where United’s campaigns are make or break is in the cup competitions. The club were knocked out of the Carabao Cup at the quarter-final stage by Tottenham in December but defeated Arsenal in the FA Cup third round and face Leicester City at home on Friday in the competition.
They are also through to the knockout stages of the Europa League, and with this competition being their only viable route back into the Champions League, they must look to win it.
