Gary Neville has disagreed with one of Ruben Amorim’s comments after Manchester United’s draw against their rivals Liverpool.

Manchester United earned a hard-fought 2-2 draw against league leaders Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday, as Rúben Amorim’s men showcased their fighting spirit to claim a valuable point.

The game began with United looking assured in possession, determined to dictate the tempo and frustrate Liverpool’s attacking threat. As the first half wore on, United grew into the contest, with Rasmus Højlund coming close to opening the scoring before the break.

After halftime, United struck first. Lisandro Martínez capitalised on a clever pass from Bruno Fernandes, drilling a shot past Alisson to give United a 1-0 lead. However, Liverpool responded quickly, with Cody Gakpo finding the equaliser just before the hour mark.

The home side then turned the game around when Mohammed Salah converted a penalty, awarded for a Matthijs de Ligt handball, to put Liverpool 2-1 up with 20 minutes remaining.

Refusing to settle for defeat, Amorim made an inspired substitution, bringing on Alejandro Garnacho. The young winger made an instant impact, delivering a brilliant assist for Amad Diallo, who slotted home the equaliser with ten minutes left.

Both teams pushed for a winner in the dying minutes, creating chances at both ends, but neither could find the decisive goal. The match ended in a thrilling draw, with United leaving Anfield with a well-deserved point.

Amorim makes “upset” point during post-match interview

Taking many by surprise, Amorim’s post match interview cut to a man who was not satisfied. The 39-year-old explained that although he was content with the performance, he would not congratulate his players on the result as his side didn’t win.

“Tomorrow we relax, [and] it’s the start of the same thing,” he told Sky Sports. “It’s also my job. So, I’m talking here, but it’s also my job, but I guarantee you, I am really trying on the basics. And so, we have to move on.

“Congratulations to the lads for the performance, not for the result.”

Further, the interviewer then mentioned that it’s the angriest he’s seen Amorim despite his side putting on their best display to date.

“Yeah, sometimes it’s like that,” he replied. “Sometimes, everybody’s angry with my players and I have to do the opposite. Today, everybody’s going to say that the lads did everything right, and I’m allowed to be upset today.”

Neville disagrees with Amorim’s assessment

However, in reaction to Amorim’s assessment of the game, former United player Gary Neville was in disagreement, feeling that the player should be celebrated for the display.

“It was the best performance, I think, under Rúben Amorim,” Neville said. “Maybe all season, by a mile.

“To come to Anfield. The best team in the league this year. It surpasses that victory at City the other week. City, obviously, in a bad moment, and the way in which the game went.

“You know, they were a little bit fortunate to get the victory [vs City] in the end, United. But I thought today they were magnificent from minute one. They fully deserved their [draw].

“We were expecting the worst. There’s no Manchester United fan woke up this morning and wasn’t thinking the worst was going to happen today, and probably vice versa. Liverpool fans thinking exactly the opposite.”
