Gary Neville has made a fresh Manchester United prediction as Rúben Amorim is set to do something Erik ten Hag couldn’t.

Rúben Amorim has been appointed as Manchester United’s new head coach, succeeding Erik ten Hag after the Dutchman’s tenure ended in disarray.

Ten Hag was sacked at the end of last month, with United’s form plummeting to 14th in the Premier League and 21st in their Europa League group, leaving the club well below expectations.

Although Amorim has officially taken the role, he has yet to oversee a match due to complications with his release clause. His debut in the dugout is scheduled for Sunday, 24 November, when United travel to face Ipswich Town in the Premier League.

In the interim, Ruud van Nistelrooy took charge, guiding United to three wins and a draw. However, he stepped aside to allow Amorim’s handpicked backroom staff to begin their work at Carrington.

Neville’s latest prediction

Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, former United captain Gary Neville has explained that he feels United can finish in the top four with Amorim in charge.

He said: “I think we will push for top four this season. I think he will get us going. All the players are putting out the right noises, aren’t they?”

“In fairness, given how congested the table still is after 11 games, United are only five points behind Chelsea and Arsenal in third and fourth respectively.”

As Neville mentioned, despite sitting 13th, the club are just a few points off the Champions League spaces. United play Arsenal at the beginning of December.

Amorim doing what Ten Hag couldn’t

This is the same prediction that Gary Neville made earlier this campaign. Speaking to Sky Sports at the beginning of the campaign, he explained that he feels Ten Hag can guide United to a top four finish.

“I hope Erik ten Hag will still be the Manchester United manager come the end of the season,” Neville told said.

“There’s no doubt that if United have a really poor start and the results are the same as last year that Ten Hag will come under massive pressure very quickly. But I am actually quietly optimistic about Manchester United.

“I just think the signings that they are bringing in are of a different profile from what they have bought in the past.

“The group of people they have now at the club, from owner down to sporting director, will not make the same mistakes the club have made in the last three or four seasons. They have wasted money and made signings that you knew would bring pressure to them at some point.

“The profile of the players they are bringing in now is right. They need a younger, quicker, athletic and more energetic football team, and I think that is what you are going to see from Manchester United this year.

“There is still an imbalance in some parts of the team where they need to get better. There are worries about Luke Shaw, who is now injured again, at left-back. Who is going to play there now?

“There’s also potentially issues up front if Rasmus Hojlund’s injury issues continue. Manchester United are obviously short up there.

“But just generally, I do think they are in a better situation than they were last year, and hopefully the change at the very top of the club with INEOS, which everyone has wanted for years, can bring more sensible decision-making.”

With the Dutchman now sacked, it’s clear he feels Amorim can do what Ten Hag failed at this season.
