Gary Neville has made an interesting claim about Amad Diallo as he believes the Manchester United star ‘completely defies’ a modern trend in football.

Manchester United have had a difficult season so far, and Erik ten Hag was dismissed in October after the poor start in the Premier League and Europa League.

New head coach Ruben Amorim has come in and started to implement a new style of play, with results and performances improving.

The Reds have won four out of his first seven games, with two defeats and another draw. The latest victory came against Manchester City after an incredible late comeback.

It was United’s first win away from home against a top six side since 2021 and Amad Diallo stole the show by winning a penalty for the equaliser and scoring an unbelievable winning goal.

Amad has been one of United’s best players this season, playing at right wingback and in the no.10 position for Amorim.

Gary Neville has been full of praise for the 22-year-old’s impact, specifically for the way he approaches the game.

Neville suggests that the Ivorian ‘completely defies’ the modern way of how wingers are beginning to play – with less emphasis on running directly at a fullback.

Amad’s relentless attacking, whether he’s in or out of possession, is a breath of fresh air for the former United captain.

“I can’t stand this modern phenomenon of wingers getting the ball and not fronting fullbacks up and just basically recycling it all the time,” Neville said on The Overlap US.

“It’s happening constantly, wingers are having the risk taken out of the game and Amad completely defies that.

“He goes back to the traditional principle of, ‘I get the ball and my first thought is I’m going to attack whoever it is that’s in front of me’ – and that’s the player I don’t want to play against as a fullback.

“I want that player that’s gonna basically take it five yards down the line, cut back and have a look to cross it with his right foot or pass it back round through the midfield.

“Amad’s intent, his risk taking, his energy, the way in which he sprints to close people down. It is how football should be played.

“I think that he’s been the best Man United player in these last four weeks under Amorim and I think he’s been the best Man United player this season in respect of how he’s approached the game, so I’m absolutely delighted for him.”

Amad has made 23 appearances so far this season. He has four goals and six assists during that period.
