Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher agree on ‘impressive’ Manchester United star vs Fulham

Manchester United began the 2024/25 Premier League season on a positive note, securing a 1-0 victory over Fulham at Old Trafford.
The match was tightly contested, but substitute Joshua Zirkzee made an impressive debut, converting a cross from Alejandro Garnacho to score the decisive goal past Bernd Leno.

While the win brought early momentum, several tense moments left United supporters uneasy. Erik ten Hag will likely focus on ironing out these concerns as the season progresses.
One man who was fantastic during the tie was Lisandro Martínez. He had a tough test but ultimately prevailed against Adama Traore on Fulham’s right-hand side.
After an impressive interview after the tie with Sky Sports, in which Martínez explained that United need to make themselves hard to beat, Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher were incredibly impressed with the 26-year-old.
“When you hear him speak like that, it gives an authority and a belief to the dressing room because he’s confident in himself,” Neville explained.
Further, Neville was asked what was it he took from the from the interview that impressed him the most, to which he replied: “I just think he’s manner.
“I mean, obviously, the fact that he’d (gesturing to Carragher) had a right go at him at the start of last season, he fronted up to it and didn’t sort of shut (down).
He’s got a massive personality on the pitch. I think, when United have got him in the team, they’re a lot more aggressive. He has that Argentinian fight and spirit, and I think the fact that he speaks with like a level of belief and authority will give his teammates comfort.”
Carragher echoed Neville’s thoughts, explaining that Martínez’s personality is the type that United need going forward.
“That was a brilliant interview because he’s giving you a little bit of tactical insight in terms of the team. He’s speaking out to the players, and you know what he did. He didn’t come on and make excuses.
“Of course, we criticize players, or we analyze, and sometimes we give them praise, but to come on and say. ‘I’m playing for Man United, if you think you can come here and not be sort of questioned, looked at, criticized’ and he was heavily criticized at the start of the last season.
“Obviously, he said, ‘I didn’t play my best football’ when he first came in, the first two games, but that type of personality to come up in front that and not look for excuses, he looks like he’s a warrior. You can see that when he plays, but I thought he came across brilliantly.”
