Gary Neville has explained the reason that Erik ten Hag subbed Casemiro during Manchester United’s defeat against rivals Liverpool.

Manchester United lost 3-0 against Liverpool on Sunday afternoon in a dreadful performance from Erik ten Hag’s side.

The Reds had an early scare after Trent Alexander-Arnold had a goal ruled out for offside after a VAR check, and it wasn’t long until the visitors opened the scoring.

Casemiro lost possession and was punished by Luis Diaz’s finish, which was repeated for the second goal before half-time.

Despite the Brazilian coming off ahead of the second half, Ten Hag’s tactics were still majorly questionable and it was Kobbie Mainoo who was pickpocketed for the third and final goal.

Toby Collyer replaced Casemiro, but Gary Neville has suggested that the change from Ten Hag was not simply due to the two mistakes that led to the goals.

Instead, he thinks the manager was forced to make the substitution because of the crowd’s reaction to Casemiro. They were groaning at his every touch because not much went right for him.

“I don’t think he would have brought him off for the two mistakes,” Neville said on Sky commentary.

“I think it was what happened after that and the reaction of the crowd. I feel for him.”

While it was an evening to forget for Casemiro, all of the attention must be with Ten Hag. The team does not look different enough from last year.

United face Southampton away from home when the Premier League is back after the international break.
