Gary Neville defends “unbelievable” Manchester United star as one-to-one talks with Ruben Amorim occur

Gary Neville has defended an “unbelievable” Manchester United star ahead of the new season after conducting one-to-one talks with Ruben Amorim.

Following a disappointing 2024/25 season, Manchester United are determined to make major improvements ahead of the new campaign.

The club has already secured the signing of Matheus Cunha, with Bryan Mbeumo expected to join him soon. Additional transfers are also planned, but they hinge on player sales.

Ruben Amorim not only needs reinforcements but must also revitalise the current squad, many of whom underperformed last term.

While some players may not have the quality to be regular starters at Old Trafford, others possess the talent to bounce back and play a key role in the team’s resurgence.

Neville defends unbelievable United star

Kobbie Mainoo was one of the players who struggled last term but his quality is clear, with some “unbelievable” performances since his emergence into the first-team.

The 20-year-old midfielder has had difficulties finding a specific role in Amorim’s system but club legend Gary Neville believes that the United boss must find a spot for him.

Speaking to Sky Sports recently, Neville said: “If we can’t give Kobbie Mainoo a job in that two in midfield, a top club will want him. Why can’t we make him a top player, if he’s one of ours and is showing talent?

“I don’t know what’s going on there in the last few months, he’s had some injuries that have caused him problems, so he needs to stay fit.

“But I’d like to feel he could be one of the two in midfield that United play.”

Mainoo held positive talks with Amorim

Mainoo has been working hard during the off-season as he looks to return to the form which saw him become one of Erik ten Hag’s most important players.

As well as working hard behind the scenes, the Academy graduate has reportedly held one-to-one talks with Amorim, and those have been described as ‘positive’.

Those reports have claimed that Mainoo is determined to reclaim a regular spot in the starting XI at Old Trafford next season.

It is easy to forget that his difficulties from last season would have been partly due to the lack of a summer break after playing at Euro 2024, and this time around he’s been able to get the right amount of rest before a full pre-season.
