Gary Neville calls out Ruben Amorim’s ‘worst decision’ as Manchester United manager

Gary Neville has identified the worst decision that Ruben Amorim made during his time in charge at Manchester United

Michael Carrick has been exactly what Manchester United fans hoped he would be after Ruben Amorim’s spell at the club took a sour turn and ended after a feud with the club officials following United’s underwhelming 1-1 draw with rivals Leeds.

The Portuguese manager made many fans question him with his persistent ideas embedded into the squad which many believed limited the strengths of his players.

United finished 15th in Amorim’s first season in the Premier League, but more notably, lost the Europa League final to fellow English club, Tottenham Hotspur in another heartless performance.

Former Untied captain Gary Neville spoke out about what he thought was the one decision made by Amorim, which was the worst of them all.

Neville calls out Amorim’s lack of Mainoo minutes

The former England international has been very vocal around Man United, often voicing an honest opinion of what happens in and around the club.

Speaking on Stick to Football, Neville stated: “Kobbie Mainoo didn’t even get a chance under Ruben really. If you think about it now and look at Mainoo in this team, that looks like the worst decision Ruben Amorim made.”

He continued: “I must admit, I never liked the handling of Mainoo. I think we talked about it a lot on this show … When he (Amorim) said at the start of the season that it was him (Mainoo) or Bruno (Fernandes), I never agreed with that.

“It killed Kobbie Mainoo. It killed him publicly. And then he never put him in the team at all, apart from against Grimsby in the cup.”

Carrick is a breath of fresh air

Whilst Amorim stuck with his persistent 3-4-2-1 system, Carrick immediately changed that and reintroduced Mainoo into the squad alongside Casemiro and captain Bruno Fernandes, unleashing the best out of all three.

Continuously, United’s midfield under Amorim would be overran with the duo of Fernandes with either Casemiro or Manuel Ugarte not being able to keep up with the tempo of a typical three-man-midfield.

Carrick may have even made a case to secure the job for next season as no particular candidate looks to be standing out. If the former midfielder can keep his run of good form, his name will certainly be in contention.

For now, United fans can have a sense of relief as a trip to Mersyside awaits. United face Everton next in the attempt to secure a Champions League finish for the first time since Erik ten Hag was in charge in 2022/23.
