Manchester United were knocked out of the Carabao Cup in embarrassing fashion following a 3-0 loss to Newcastle United in the fourth round.

United failed to impress yet again as they lost the cup game convincingly, making it eight defeats so far this term.

It was first-half domination from Eddie Howe’s men, who scored twice before adding a third mid-way through the second half.

Miguel Almirón and Lewis Hall pounced on the defensive frailties of the home side during the opening 45 minutes. The opening goal, scored by Almiron, was filled with mistakes from United.

Right-back Tino Livramento was able to gallop down the right flank in transition, come inside and pass right into the Newcastle winger, who took advantage of a sleeping Diogo Dalot.

Gary Neville, who was on commentary duty for the game on Sky Sports, took aim at the United right-back, as well as Mason Mount and Alejandro Garnacho for the opening goal from Newcastle.

“You can’t say it hasn’t been coming,” said Neville after the visitors took the lead. “Manchester United have just lost their discipline in the last 10 minutes. They have looked anxious, the crowd have been quiet.

“Garnacho just gets muscled off it, [Sergio] Reguilon goes round him and Livramento’s run is wonderful but he goes past Mason Mount like he is not there. Then he ignores the first run of [Anthony] Gordon when he could have played it and then finds Almiron. Dalot is sleeping and Almiron is not, he is on the move, he is rapid and Dalot cannot get back.”

It was schoolboy defending from a side that prided itself on solidity at the back last term with Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane at the heart of it.

In fact, Neville went onto describe his former side as being like an “under-nines team” after former Chelsea defender Hall added the second goal.

United face up against Fulham in the Premier League on the weekend.
