Gary Neville agrees with Roy Keane on replacing 2 Man United players
Gary Neville has called for Manchester United to replace two players in the upcoming transfer market.
Neville, 48, appeared 602 times for United across a 19-year career at the club.
The now-Sky Sports pundit has been largely supportive of Erik ten Hag’s progress at Old Trafford so far; but believes that he has taken the current squad as far as they can go.
United finished third in the Premier League last season and appeared in two cup finals – winning the Carabao Cup and losing the FA Cup – however, they are still missing key profiles within the squad.
Following the FA Cup Final, where United lost 1-0 to rivals Manchester City, Roy Keane expressed he was “sick” of repeating that the team need a new goalkeeper and striker.
This is a sentiment that Neville shares, suggesting that David de Gea and Anthony Martial’s time at the club should be over.
“You have got to start with a centre forward and a goalkeeper,” Neville told Metro.co.uk. “If you don’t have those two positions fixed in a football team you are massively struggling.
“Manchester United are massively struggling particularly up front but it has come to the time where they have to get a top goalkeeper. That Cup final [against City] said it to us all. I don’t like mentioning it too much but the second goal shouldn’t have gone in the back of the net.
“The reality of it is, David de Gea has had a great career at Manchester United, he has been a fantastic goalkeeper. But now is the time for him to be challenged and get someone in to be that no1.”
De Gea won the Premier League Golden Glove last term but has yet to fully adjust to the desired playing style of his manager. His contract runs out at the end of June but reports suggest that he was re-sign with the club.
Meanwhile, Martial’s latest injury could ironically be an influence in him staying at Old Trafford for at least another year. Ten Hag is desperate to sign a world class centre forward to replace the Frenchman though.
Continuing, Neville also believes that United need an upgrade in the engine room, despite Casemiro and Christian Eriksen being signed by the club last summer.
“But you can look at midfield as well. There is a problem where they have got two players who have got legs who aren’t good enough on the ball and two good enough on the ball who haven’t got the legs,” he added.
“I still think the composition of that midfield is not right so they need to sort that out. You can have one player who maybe can’t get about but he [Ten Hag] wants to play through the midfield with technical players and he can’t do that with the players that he’s got there.”
