Gary Lineker has claimed that Manchester United should “take a punt on” one of the most prolific strikers in the Bundesliga this summer.
When the summer transfer window opened, Manchester United made it clear that bolstering their attack was a top priority, with Matheus Cunha becoming their first signing.
The 26-year-old forward netted 15 goals in the Premier League last season and is expected to play a key role at Old Trafford moving forward.
United are also targeting Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo, and the addition of both Cunha and Mbeumo would significantly strengthen Ruben Amorim’s attacking options.
Following these moves, the club still want to sign a number nine. However, further signings will depend on outgoing transfers with several players up for sale.
Lineker recommends Bundesliga striker to United
United fans liked the idea of the club signing someone like Viktor Gyokeres or Victor Osimhen this summer but they seem to be unlikely deals now.
There aren’t too many top strikers on the market but Gary Lineker has suggested that United and other Premier League clubs should be looking at Borussia Dortmund forward Serhou Guirassy.
The Guinean is a prolific Bundesliga striker, having score 34 goals last term. He has also netted three times so far for Dortmund at the Club World Cup.
“We’re still waiting to see what Arsenal do, and there are a few other Premier League sides looking for a No.9 – is he worth taking a punt on?” Lineker said on The Rest is Football podcast.
“He’s strong, he’s quick – his finishing was really good all season and he was prolific in the Champions League as well.”
Frustrating obstacle in Guirassy deal
While there is no doubting Guirassy’s ability, with a tremendous goalscoring record in the last couple of years, any deal does have a major obstacle.
The 27-year-old only joined Borussia Dortmund last summer and would reportedly cost around £60 million as he still has three years remaining on his contract.
Frustratingly, United had the opportunity to sign Guirassy for less than £20 million but decided against moving for him before his eventual transfer to Dortmund.
We have seen many occasions in recent years where United have missed the chance to sign a player for a cheaper fee. Andre Onana was a free agent 12 months before the club put more than £40 million on the table for him in 2023.
Guirassy is a top striker but unfortunately a move seems like it is unlikely this summer as Dortmund will have no reason to sell below his hefty valuation.
