Former Leicester City striker Gary Lineker has offered praise to one Manchester United star he describes as “underrated”.

Manchester United have had an underwhelming season so far as they sit 13th in the Premier League table.

Poor form led to the sacking of Erik ten Hag and new head coach Ruben Amorim has faced difficulties since arriving at Old Trafford.

The Portuguese boss has taken charge of 20 games and only won 10 of those, with eight losses coming in that time.

Some players have managed to stand out in a positive light during that time, despite the struggling form of the team.

Lineker praises underrated United star

Gary Lineker believes that Harry Maguire has been one of those players, with the English centre-back described as “underrated” in the pundit’s eyes.

Maguire has found a place in the centre of Amorim’s back three and he managed to score his first goal of the season last time out, heading in at the last minute to secure a win against The Foxes in the FA Cup.

“He is a former Leicester man as well—I think he is underrated at times,” Lineker said, as per RedMancunian.

“I think he is better. We all know he can be caught on the turn. He is not the quickest on the turn, but he is a great competitor.”

Speaking about the areas in which Maguire excels, the ex-Barcelona forward added: “He is good on the ball, terrific in both boxes and will get you the odd goal.”

Maguire long passing can be key for United

It is no secret that this formation change has benefited Maguire, and there’s another aspect in his game which can help Amorim’s side.

Maguire’s switch of play to the flanks can be key when the team have stronger options at wingback – Patrick Dorgu will hopefully provide that this season.

Finding those players in isolations can be very useful and it is something we saw as early as Amorim’s first training session at Carrington.

Matthijs de Ligt is a great defender but doesn’t have the same passing range as Maguire, who can regularly hit those passes with precision.

After signing his one-year extension last month, Maguire can continue to push and show why he deserves to start at Old Trafford.
