Full statements from Man United, Leeds United, and Premier League condemning Munich & Istanbul chants
Manchester United beat Leeds United 2-0 at Elland Road on Sunday afternoon but statements have been released after “unacceptable” chants were heard during the Premier League encounter.
Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho scored second-half goals to secure the three points for Erik ten Hag’s side on the day.
However, unfortunately, the chants from both sets of supporters in the stadium showed the ugly side of the game.
United fans were heard chanting about Istanbul, in reference to the violence in Turkey before a UEFA Cup semi-final against Galatasaray, when two Leeds supporters tragically died. The home supporters meanwhile referenced the Munich Air Disaster. It was the 65th anniversary just six days ago.
The two clubs released a joint statement after the game concluded on Sunday, which read:
“Both clubs strongly condemn chanting from both sets of fans regarding historic tragedies at today’s game.
“Such behaviour is completely unacceptable and we will continue to work together with our respective fan groups and the Premier League and other authorities on eradicating it from football.”
The Premier League added: “The Premier League condemns the chanting heard during today’s match between Leeds United and Manchester United.
“The League is treating the issue of tragedy chanting as a priority and as a matter of urgency.”
