Frontrunner emerges in Joshua Zirkzee transfer race as Man Utd striker is ‘highly thought of’

Joshua Zirkzee has started three games in a row for Manchester United although there still seems to be uncertainty over his future.

Manchester United signed three new forwards in the latest summer transfer window as Benjamin Šeško, Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha arrived at the club.

That led to chances for Joshua Zirkzee being scarce, and the Dutch striker had not started a game for United this term until the recent clash with Everton.

Zirkzee has now started three games in a row although he will also be aware that these chances are coming due to the injury to Šeško, who is back available soon.

There have been rumours about a potential January exit for the striker and it seems like one club could be leading the race to sign him now.

Frontrunner emerges in Zirkzee transfer race

Zirkzee has regularly been linked with different Serie A clubs in recent months as he has proven to be successful in the Italian league.

Transfer insider Pete O’Rourke has claimed that the United forward remains ‘highly thought of’ in Italy and that AS Roma are emerging as frontrunners if he was to leave in January.

“As long as he’s getting game time I’m sure Zirkzee will be happy that he’s got a role to play at Old Trafford but, it won’t stop interest in him because he is still highly thought of in Italy,” he stated.

“He had great success in Serie A with Bologna…Roma are one of the teams leading the race to bring Zirkzee back to Italy.

“So, let’s see what happens over the next couple of weeks.”

Should United let Zirkzee leave?

Despite recent game-time, it does feel like Zirkzee is at least the third-choice striker at Old Trafford, with Cunha and Šeško above him.

But we have also seen in periods how useful Zirkzee can be if used correctly. For some reason, United have learned how to cross the ball in Šeško’s absence.

When the ball has been played on the floor, the Dutch striker has been able to show his ability to link play but he will be wondering how often he will get those opportunities when Šeško is back.

It would not be surprising if he considered an exit in January although United could look to reject any offers in case injuries occur in the back-end of the season.
