Manchester United and Wolverhampton Wonderers will face off for the first time this Premier League season to round off their respective 2022 calendar years.

With the two sides sitting 5th and 18th respectively, both sides are fighting to gain positions on those above, but for very different reasons.

Wolves will be looking to break themselves out of the relegation zone and escape the looming doom of a drop back to the Championship, while Manchester United are looking to break themselves into the top four and Champions League qualification.

Ignoring the two friendly match losses in Spain, Manchester United have been on good form both before and after the World Cup. Most recently defeating Nottingham Forest and Burnley once domestic football resumed, the Reds have scored five and conceded zero.

Before the World Cup, Manchester United played Aston Villa twice and Fulham once. First playing Aston Villa in the Premier League, the reds suffered a 3-0 loss at Villa Park. However, a few days later Erik ten Hag’s men won 4-2 in the EFL Cup with Alejandro Garnacho producing a stellar performance off the bench.

In the following fixture against Fulham, it was Garnacho off the bench once again who saved the day, scoring an incredible injury-time winner to claim a 2-1 victory.

Wolves’ recent form has been mixed. After the appointment of Julen Lopetegui on 5 November, the Midlands club have certainly seen a turn in the tide, most recently defeating Everton 2-1 and recording back-to-back wins for the first time this season.

Their two losses in the last five games have been to league leaders Arsenal and 7th placed Brighton, which, considering the club’s current position, they can hardly be blamed for.

Their three victories have seen them claim three points against the aforementioned Everton as well as two EFL Cup victories, against Leeds United and Gillingham, respectively.

With Manchester United the next test for Lopetegui, he will no doubt be looking to cause an upset to Ten Hag’s rhythm to end 2022 on a high after a tough first half of a season for Wolverhampton Wonderers.
