One forgotten Manchester United star is set to make his return to the pitch this weekend after almost three months out of action with an injury.
Manchester United have not had great luck with injuries in the last couple of years.
Right now, the likes of Amad, Lisandro Martínez and Joshua Zirkzee are unavailable for selection. They all suffered injuries after looking promising in Ruben Amorim’s system.
Last term it was a defensive injury crisis at Old Trafford which saw Erik ten Hag play most of the season without a senior left-back in his squad.
However, one of the players who has had a tougher time than most with injuries is 20-year-old midfielder Dan Gore, who seems to have become a forgotten star at Old Trafford.
Gore excited supporters with his performances in the 2023 pre-season and was awarded his first-team debut soon afterwards in September 2023 against Crystal Palace.
He has had two loans since then to try and help him get first-team minutes away from Old Trafford but injuries have seemed to ruin both of those spells.
Gore made just one appearance for Port Vale last term and that is the same amount of games he has played for Rotherham this campaign. After assisting against Birmingham City on his debut, Gore suffered a foot injury that has kept him out for an extended period.
Gore set for return to action after 85 days
Fortunately for the young player, he is approaching full fitness now and was spotted in training this week with Ruben Amorim’s first-team squad at Carrington.
Gore was in attendance at Rotherham’s 3-3 draw with Mansfield Town last week and has also been said to have trained with their squad in recent days.
With just two League One games remaining this term, the United loanee could be set to make his return to action after 85 days when The Millers face Stevenage on Sunday afternoon.
“We’ll get a full week into him after that and look to give him some minutes at Stevenage,” Rotherham boss Matt Hamshaw told reporters.
They will then face Peterborough the following weekend in their final game of the season, one that Gore will also want to be involved in.
Gore heading into make-or-break season
Gore was once one of the most highly-rated Academy players at United but his injuries over the last year have caused him to go back under the radar.
There is no doubting the player’s talents, however, and returning to full fitness ahead of the season’s end could be a great thing for him.
United’s summer schedule is packed with fixtures. Two post-season friendlies in the Far East are then followed by several pre-season fixtures, including a trip to the United States.
Gore will be hoping that he can play as much football in that time to make a positive impression on Amorim ahead of what will be a crucial season for him next term.

After missing out on a lot of development over the last two seasons, the midfielder’s performances next term could be make-or-break for his Old Trafford future.
