Five expected Manchester United shirt number changes for 2025/26 after Amad and Matheus Cunha hints

There could be a number of Manchester United players with new shirt numbers for the 2025/26 campaign, and Amad looks likely to be one of them.

Manchester United are hoping to turn things around in the upcoming Premier League campaign after a dreadful season last time out.

The Reds need to put their failures behind them and focus fully on preparing to improve in the coming months, with pre-season just around the corner for Ruben Amorim’s side.

Another aspect of the summer is that shirt number changes often happen and there could be a few occurring in the coming weeks.

Amad released an Instagram story recently which hinted that he will be moving on from the no.16 and there are several other players who could be wearing new numbers come the start of the 2025/26 campaign.

Amad

Of course, as just mentioned, Amad looks set for a new number after his breakthrough season under Amorim last term, with 11 goals and 10 assists across the campaign.

The Ivorian initially occupied the no.19 when he arrived at Old Trafford but changed to the no.16 so that Raphaël Varane could take his preferred shirt when he joined the club.

Some fans have claimed that Amad deserves the no.10 shirt now that Marcus Rashford is set to depart the club but Matheus Cunha has already hinted that he will be receiving that shirt.

Instead, Amad could end up taking that iconic no.7 shirt. Mason Mount is unlikely to leave the club but could opt to change and follow in Antonio Valencia’s footsteps by moving away from that number.

With the no.7 shirt looming large on many of the players who have worn it in recent years, Amad seems like one star who wouldn’t be impacted by that pressure.

Kobbie Mainoo

Kobbie Mainoo made his first appearance for United during the 2022/23 campaign and donned the no.73, before changing to the no.37 for his breakthrough campaign the following year.

Still with the same jersey, some have suggested that Mainoo may keep that number for a prolonged period similarly to how Scott McTominay continued with the no.39 until his eventual departure.

However, the 20-year-old could also decide to take the vacant no.14 shirt after Christian Eriksen’s exit, with another Academy star in Jesse Lingard previously shining with that number.

Toby Collyer

Toby Collyer appeared in the first-team across the last campaign and probably would have gotten more chances on the pitch if he didn’t suffer a couple of injury setbacks.

Erik ten Hag seemed to rate the England youth international highly and Amorim has also had kind words to say about Collyer since arriving.

Currently wearing the no.43 on his back, the midfielder could be due an upgrade this summer and the no.28 seems like one which would suit the combative player.

Harry Amass

Just like Collyer, Harry Amass has made his breakthrough into the first-team squad at Old Trafford over the last season and it looks like he could stay at the club next season rather than head out on loan.

The 18-year-old has shown quality on the left flank and will be hoping to build on some of his early performances. He currently wears the no.41 but could be set for an upgrade.

Usually the left-sided defender wants the no.3 but that’s currently being worn by Noussair Mazraoui. Luke Shaw prefers the no.23 and Patrick Dorgu has opted for no.13.

It makes perfect sense for Amass to take on the no.33 from next season, with the number last being worn by Academy graduate Brandon Williams.

Chido Obi

The final starlet who could get a shirt upgrade is Chido Obi, who also emerged in the first-team in recent months and impressed whilst on the post-season tour of Asia.

He probably didn’t expect such a quick rise to Amorim’s squad but has already made a handful of appearances and could be in and around the squad again next year.

Obi currently wears the no.56 and is certainly going to want an upgrade on that number next term. Similarly to the point made about left-backs, strikers will want the no.9 on their back but the next best thing is a number which has the nine included.

The no.19 is likely to be taken by potential signing Bryan Mbeumo, and so Obi could be looking at the no.29 for himself this summer.
