“First of all…” Rúben Amorim explains surprise Manchester United XI decision vs West Ham as six changes made

Rúben Amorim has explained why he has selected such a strong starting XI as Manchester United face West Ham at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Rúben Amorim has made a host of changes as Manchester United prepare to face West Ham in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.

Following their fantastic 4-1 win over Athletic Club to book them a place in the Europa League final in midweek, Amorim has made six changes to the team, although many have been surprised that it is still a strong starting team.

Altay Bayındır, Luke Shaw, Amad, Harry Amass, Mason Mount, and Kobbie Mainoo all come into the side, replacing those such as Harry Maguire, Casemiro, and André Onana.

However, Leny Yoro, Noussair Mazraoui, and Rasmus Højlund all stay in the side, which is surprising considering the tie’s relative meaninglessness compared to the Europa League final against Tottenham Hotspur in ten days’ time.

Amorim explains strong XI decision

Speaking to MUTV ahead of the game, Amorim explained that he has selected a strong side against West Ham before, first and foremost, he wants to win the game as that is really important for building momentum.

“First of all we want to win the game and perform, it’s really important for us,” Amorim explained.

“Of course, we are going to save some players that could have the risk of some injury, even if it’s a small thing, we are so near a big goal for our season. But we need to win, to perform, and we have players to do that today.”

Amorim will no doubt be looking to make early changes as he rotates and rests his most important players.

All eyes on the Europa League final

This West Ham tie and the Chelsea fixture in London next week are the perfect chances for Amorim to prepare his squad for the Europa League final.

Many players are in contention to start, with those such as Mount, Mainoo, and Manuel Ugarte all pushing to be included against Tottenham on 21 May. Amorim will no doubt be using the two games to give players chances to impress.

However, the two fixtures also provide a chance for Amroim to rest some of his players, with those like Mazraoui and Højlund almost certain to start, barring injury.

The two ties will no doubt give hints as to Amorim’s thoughts about who will start the final as the club build up to the climax of what has been a dire and emotional campaign.
