Andrei Kanchelskis detailed a hilarious exchange between himself and Sir Alex Ferguson shortly after signing for Manchester United.

The Russian winger joined The Reds in 1991 from Shakhtar Donetsk as he became one of the few non-British players in England’s top flight.

Kanchelskis’ career at Old Trafford was one filled with success as he was an important part of the side that won the first-ever Premier League title in 1993. The team went on to win the league and FA Cup double in the following season. He also won the League Cup with the side in 1992 as United were pipped by Leeds United to the title.

With 31 goals and 161 appearances across his four-year spell at United, Kanchelskis would’ve been delighted with how things went in Manchester, however, a nervy moment with Sir Alex Ferguson came in his opening days at the club.

Detailed in his autobiography, the wide midfielder explained how he was the victim of a dressing room joke. Foreign players would be taught to swear by their British peers and Kanchelskis said that his teammates taught him the ‘correct’ way to address the manager of Man United.

“Almost the first time I came across Alex Ferguson in the corridors of the Cliff, he said to me, ‘All right, Andrei, how’s it going?’,” he began.

“I smiled at him and replied, ‘Fuck off, Scottish bastard.’

“Ferguson stopped dead in his tracks and then began to smile as he heard laughter echoing down the corridor, while I stood there bewildered.”

Following his career at United, Kanchelskis would go onto play for Everton, Florentina and Rangers and he remains the only player to ever score in a Manchester derby, a Merseyside derby and the Old Firm. His hat trick against Manchester City for The Reds in 1994 will forever be a fond memory for United supporters,
